Top Tourist Activities in Uganda
Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
One of the most thrilling and unforgettable travel experiences in Uganda is mountain gorilla trekking, a unique activity that allows wildlife enthusiasts to get up close and personal with these incredible Giant Apes in their natural habitat. The mecca for gorilla trekking in Uganda is the 32100-hectare Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that shelters almost half the World’s population of these Giant Apes. You are almost guaranteed to see mountain gorillas in any of the four trekking sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo), where you will search for one of the over 25 habituated gorilla families.
Big game viewing in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Parks
Going on a Big game safari is a mandatory stop on any Ugandan bucket list, because how can you go to the “Pearl of Africa” and not be in awe of the wildlife? Unless you are from exploring another African country, we guess it is surreal to be right in their natural habitats and not in front of a TV screen when you see your first lions, leopards, or giraffes in the wild.
While Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Parks are the most popular places to see Big Game in Uganda, other options are the untouched Kidepo Valley National Park, situated in the remote Northeastern corner of the country, and Lake Mburo National Park along the way to Bwindi, Mgahinga, and Queen Elizabeth National Parks. These savannah Parks are even perfect for self-drives, especially across their savannahs as well as wooded areas, with opportunities of spotting real-life Zebras, cheetahs, Cape buffaloes, the gigantic African bush elephants, Giant elands, Topis, Uganda Kobs, Topis, leopards, Spotted hyenas, Olive baboons, vervet monkeys, impalas, and others. However, some of these wildlife species are found in specific Parks and not all, like cheetahs in Kidepo.
Hiking in the Rwenzori Mountains, Mount Elgon, or the Virunga Volcanoes
For emphasis, the nature in Uganda is phenomenal, and even when you think you will need 25 days to explore the entire country, it won’t be enough, and also, there won’t ever be a boring moment, all thanks to the sheer spectrum of natural wonders. We must say the best way to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature is always hiking.
Uganda’s numerous hiking trails range from the easy, everybody-can-try-it walks to the difficult multi-day hiking experiences. For this reason, if outdoor adventures are what you are after, hiking in Uganda is the way to go. You will have a chance to explore the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, Mount Elgon, and the Virunga Volcanoes, among others.
The most popular multi-day hiking wonderland is the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, towering at 5109 meters above sea level. This is Africa’s third-highest peak and features several trails, ranging from day hikes to multi-day hikes (up to 9 days leading to the Margherita Peak). The hiking trails here are impeccably maintained, and the infrastructure (in the form of huts or Camps) is decent. While on your hiking safari, you can also add Mount Elgon, Mount Moroto, and Virunga Volcanoes.
City sightseeing in Entebbe and Kampala
