When does the chimpanzee habituation start?
The normal day of chimpanzee habituation in Kibale Forest National Park begins at around 6:00 am. You spend the longer part of the day observing how these primates behave from the moment they wake up till late evening. In between, you get a chance to watch chimpanzees feed or look for forage (they depend on leaves, fruits, insects, and more), bonding, mating, playing, and they begin nesting at night.
Around the afternoon, chimpanzees spend most of their time playing, bonding, and socializing. They are less mobile and can be spotted at a close range when relaxed. The Kibale chimpanzee habituation experience involves exploring the partially habituated chimpanzee troop/community.
What does chimpanzee habituation mean?
Chimpanzee habituation in Kibale is a process and is a largely gradual means in which the unhabituated chimpanzee communities are made acclimatized to human sights. The process involves converting these primates without impacting their natural behaviors. The step-by-step habituation process is carefully done with experts from Uganda Wildlife Authority (researchers, trackers, or conservationists), and other environmentalists.
On the actual habituation, when the unhabituated chimpanzees are introduced to human presence, trackers or researchers spend most of their time following these primates in the jungle. They take a record of the behaviors, pictures, and name them.
To achieve the habituation goal, consistency and patience are needed. The habituation process helps reduce the fear or aggression of the chimpanzees. As a result, they become comfortable to the human presence once they have completed the circle.
