Nyungwe Forest National Park — Primates and Birding

Nyungwe Forest, in south-west Rwanda on the border with Burundi, is one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse rainforests. It is home to 13 primate species including chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys and the Angola colobus — the largest arboreal primate in Africa, seen in troops of up to 400 individuals. The park’s signature activity is tracking these colobus troops along the Bigugu ridge, often encountering them in the forest canopy just above head height.

Akagera, in the east of Rwanda along the Tanzanian border, is a completely different Rwanda. Here rolling savannah, acacia woodland, papyrus swamp and a chain of shallow lakes make up a classic African game drive landscape. All of the Big Five are present: lions and rhinos were successfully reintroduced and the populations are growing steadily. Elephants, buffaloes, hippos, leopards, zebras, topi, eland and over 500 bird species round out the wildlife list.

Gishwati-Mukura, gazetted as a national park in 2016, is Rwanda’s newest protected area. Once almost completely deforested, the forest has been partially restored and now supports a small population of chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys and over 100 bird species. Gorilla trekking here is in development; for now the park offers chimpanzee trekking and guided forest walks in a completely crowd-free setting. It is an excellent add-on for travellers who want an off-the-beaten-track experience.

Best Time to Visit Rwanda in 2027

Rwanda can be visited year-round, but the two dry seasons offer the best conditions for trekking and game viewing:

• June to September — the long dry season, generally considered the best time for gorilla and chimp trekking. Trails are drier and the views from the volcanoes are clearer. This is the peak tourist season so permits should be booked several months in advance.
• December to February — the short dry season, with warm temperatures and reliable sunshine. Slightly fewer visitors than the June–September peak, making this an excellent time for combining trekking with the growing birding scene.

Gorilla Trekking Permits in 2027

A gorilla trekking permit for Volcanoes National Park costs USD 1,500 per person for international tourists. This fee is set by Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and includes the one-hour gorilla visit, ranger and guide fees, and the conservation surcharge. The permit does not include park entry, accommodation, transfers or gratuities.

• Permits must be purchased through RDB or a licensed tour operator — they cannot be bought at the park gate on the day.

Getting to Rwanda — Entry and Flights

Rwanda’s main international gateway is Kigali International Airport (KGL). Direct flights operate from Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Dubai, Amsterdam, Brussels and London, among others. From Nairobi the flight takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes; from London 8–9 hours with one stop.

East African nationals can enter Rwanda visa-free or on arrival. Citizens of most other countries can obtain a 30-day visa on arrival at the airport (USD 50) or in advance through the Rwanda e-visa portal. Health requirements: yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from a yellow-fever-endemic country. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended, particularly for visits to Akagera National Park. Rwanda Safari Planning Tips

• Book permits 6–12 months in advance for July and August travel. Other months can often be secured with 2–4 months’ notice but earlier is always better.
• Allow acclimatisation time. Volcanoes NP sits at 2,600m. If you are coming directly from a low-altitude destination, a night in Kigali (1,567m) before the trek helps significantly.
• Pack layers. Mornings on the volcano slopes are cold and wet; afternoons in Akagera are hot. A waterproof jacket, thermal base layer and light clothing all belong in the same bag.
• Hire a porter. Rwanda’s conservation areas employ local porters at the trailheads for around USD 15–20. They carry your bag, help on steep sections and provide direct income to communities. Most trekkers who hire a porter say it was one of the best decisions of the trip.
• Combine with Uganda. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda shares the same Virunga ecosystem as Volcanoes NP and offers gorilla trekking at a lower permit price (USD 800). A Rwanda-Uganda combination gives you two gorilla experiences and significantly broader wildlife viewing.
