Mount Gahinga Lodge

Since opening its doors in 2002, Mount Gahinga Lodge has been the perfect base to enjoy gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, and volcano climbing on the Ugandan side of the Virunga Conservation area. It was the first Lodge established by Praveen Moman and was inspired by the traditional design as well as building techniques recently reimagined. If you visited 10 years ago and again recently, you will notice that the lounge, dining area, and gardens have been remodeled and two new deluxe Bandas added.

Its 8 traditional hand-built Bandas (6 standard and 2 deluxe) reflect the magic of the aesthetic cultures and ways of life of the Bafumbira people, with each Banda featuring an en-suite bathroom, private porch, and fireplace. Also provided here are personal butler service for guests, locally inspired food, complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the property, complimentary 50-minute spa treatments and massages, and all-inclusive premium drinks. 

Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp

Also referred to as the “Mgahinga Community Campground), Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp is found at the entrance to the Park and only 12 kilometers from Kisoro Town. One of the things you will love about the Camp is the jaw-dropping views of the Virunga Volcanoes and the fact that it is the ideal starting point for hiking the Virunga Volcanoes on the Ugandan side- Sabyinyo, Muhabura, and Gahinga. Being the only budget facility at the Park boundary/Ntebeko, it is usually the preferred choice for budget travelers. Guests are accommodated in any of the three Bandas (two en-suite and one which is not self-contained), featuring a bathroom (with cold/hot shower), the dormitory (with three bunker beds), or the option of Camping (with own tent or vehicle rooftop).

Traveler’s Rest Hotel Kisoro

Set in the outskirts of Kisoro Town and built in 1955 by Walter Baumgartel, Traveler’s Rest Hotel is one of the oldest Hotels in the country, with a history steep in mountain gorilla conservation. It is synonymous with popular names like “Dian Fossey” because it was her second home. The budget Hotel was remodeled in 1999, although the charm of a somewhat colonial style was maintained.

There are 12 spacious en-suite rooms which were tastefully decorated with an exceptional selection of Congo Art, and they overlook a well-maintained courtyard and provide the magnificent Virunga Volcanoes as a backdrop.
