How to choose accommodation in East Africa

The type of accommodation

Accommodation services are categorized into three types, i.e, budget, midrange, and luxury. If you are looking for first-class services, a luxury option is the best choice for you. These facilities offer all-inclusive services and also comprise amenities such as bathtubs, swimming pools, private balconies, and en-suite bathrooms. Luxury accommodation is best for honeymoons and other travelers seeking exclusive safari experiences. Luxury accommodations cost between $400 to over $1500 per person per night. Midrange lodges and guest houses are second to luxury. They offer a balance of comfort, quality, and affordability, hence the most booked accommodation type.Bisate Lodge

Midrange is best for travelers looking for comfort but not necessarily the extreme luxury. Midrange lodges cost between $10 to $500. Budget hotels/lodges are simple but clean and the most affordable option for solo travelers, backpackers, and tight-budget travelers.  The cost of staying at budget accommodation ranges between $10  to $100 per person per day.  Other types of accommodation include permanent tented camp, Mobile /seasonal tented camps, Homestays, and camp sites

Online platforms

You can also book your accommodation through online platforms selling such services. The relevant platforms include Booking.com, Expedia, TripAdvisor, Agoda, Airbnb, among others.  These platforms feature different hotels/lodges with their prices, which allow you to compare amenities and prices before booking a hotel of your choice

 Direct Booking

This includes researching for a hotel/lodge of your choice, looking for their website, and contacting them directly through either email or phone call. Inquire about availability and prices.

When to book Accommodation

Travel seasons are categorized into two categories. The dry/peak season is from June to September and December to February, and the wet season is from March to May and October to November. The dry season is the favorite and most busy travel season. Lodges/hotels have many bookings, and some sell out completely on certain days. Booking accommodation in high/peak season is therefore highly recommended in advance.

How to pay for accommodations

You are required to pay a 50% deposit for your accommodation. If you are booking through a travel agent, the travel operator will require you to pay a 50% deposit of the total safari cost. Part of this will be deposited in accommodation. The most preferred currency is USD, especially in the luxury and mid-range lodges. Budget lodges can accept local currency. In the low season, you can pay for accommodation upon check-in.
