Home » 4 Days Mara River Crossing Safari

The 4 Days Mara River Crossing Safari is designed for travelers who want to experience one of the most dramatic stages of the Great Migration in Tanzania. During the migration season, huge herds of wildebeest and zebras move into the northern Serengeti in search of fresh grazing. Eventually, they reach the Mara River, where the herds may gather along the banks before making the difficult crossing into Kenya’s Maasai Mara.

This 4-day safari gives you time to explore the northern Serengeti, follow the migrating herds and spend more than one day looking for a possible river crossing.

Superfine Safaris Limited, offers the safari around the movement of the migration rather than treating the Mara River crossing as a guaranteed event. The animals decide when and where they cross, so flexibility and sufficient time in the northern Serengeti are essential.

Safari Day by Day

Day 1: Arusha to Northern Serengeti

Your 4 Days Mara River Crossing Safari begins in Arusha. After breakfast, meet your Superfine Safaris guide and begin your journey towards the northern Serengeti.

The drive takes you through changing landscapes before reaching the vast plains and woodland of the Serengeti. Depending on your preferred travel style, we can also arrange a domestic flight to the northern Serengeti, particularly for travellers who want to maximize their time in the migration area. On arrival, continue with a game drive as you make your way towards your accommodation.

During the afternoon, your guide begins looking for signs of the migrating herds. Depending on the location of the wildebeest, you may see large groups moving across the plains or gathering in areas around the Mara River. The northern Serengeti is also home to resident wildlife, so keep your eyes open for elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes and predators.

Later, check into your camp or lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Mara River Crossing Experience in Northern Serengeti

Mara River CrossingToday is the main migration day of your safari. Wake up early, have breakfast and set out with your Superfine Safaris guide to follow the movement of the herds.

During the migration season, wildebeest may gather around the Mara River before attempting to cross. You may see large groups moving along the riverbank, while others pause and appear hesitant to enter the water.

This waiting period can be surprisingly exciting. The animals may spend hours assessing the river before the first wildebeest finally enters the water. Once the movement begins, other animals can quickly follow.

If a crossing takes place, you may witness wildebeest and zebras swimming through the Mara River and scrambling up the opposite bank.

However, if the animals do not cross on this particular day, your guide will continue exploring the area in search of the herds and other wildlife.

The northern Serengeti is excellent game-viewing country beyond the migration, so the day can include sightings of lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hyenas and potentially other predators.

Return to your accommodation in the evening.

Overnight: Overnight: Singita Mara River Tented Camp / Mara Mara Tented Lodge / Gnu Mara River Migration Camp

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Full-Day Northern Serengeti Migration Safari

Mara River CrossingToday provides another opportunity to follow the Great Migration. After breakfast, head out for a full-day game drive with a picnic lunch.

Your guide will monitor the location of the herds and determine the best areas to explore. The wildebeest may have remained near the Mara River, moved to another section of the river or continued through the northern Serengeti.

This flexibility is important because the migration does not operate according to a fixed timetable.

If the herds are preparing to cross, you will spend time observing their behaviour from a responsible distance. If they have moved away from the river, your game drive will follow their movements while exploring the surrounding wildlife areas.

This is also an excellent opportunity to concentrate on predators. The abundance of wildebeest and zebras during migration season can attract lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators.

Return to camp or lodge later in the afternoon for dinner and your final night in the northern Serengeti.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Northern Serengeti to Arusha

Wake up early for breakfast and, depending on your departure arrangements, enjoy a final morning game drive.

The morning is a beautiful time to explore the Serengeti as wildlife becomes active and the landscape takes on a different atmosphere.

After the game drive, begin your journey back to Arusha. For travellers who prefer to reduce driving time, we can arrange a scheduled or private flight from a northern Serengeti airstrip to Arusha.

Your 4 Days Mara River Crossing Safari ends in Arusha.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Is the Mara River Crossing Guaranteed?

No. This is something we make clear to every traveller booking a Mara River crossing safari. The wildebeest may gather at the river but remain there for hours or even move away. They can also cross at a different location from where safari vehicles are waiting. What we can do is give you the best possible opportunity by:

  • Travelling during the migration season
  • Spending multiple nights in northern Serengeti
  • Staying in suitable migration areas
  • Working with experienced safari guides
  • Following the movement of the herds
  • Remaining flexible with daily game-drive plans

This approach gives you a much better safari experience than treating the crossing as a scheduled event.
