Arrival & Canoe Birding Experience

Upon arrival at Mabamba landing site, you will meet experienced local bird guides and receive a short briefing. After settling into a traditional motorized canoe, you set off into the papyrus channels of the wetland. The canoe ride is the most exciting part of the day, as you slowly navigate through narrow waterways searching for Mabamba’s most famous resident the Shoebill Stork. The quiet movement of the canoe allows close but respectful viewing of birds in their natural habitat. Expect to see birds such as Shoebill Stork, Papyrus Gonolek, African Jacana, Purple Heron, Malachite Kingfisher, White-winged Swamp Warbler, African Fish Eagle

Your guide will help with identification, behaviour interpretation, and positioning for photography. An early start is essential, as bird activity is highest during the cool morning hours. After the primary Shoebill search, the canoe trip continues deeper into different sections of the wetland.
