Where is Mount Rwenzori?

Mount Rwenzori is Uganda’s highest Mountain and Africa’s third-highest Mountain, located in the western side of the country, straddling the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The summit is located at 5,109 meters above sea level. While the mountain range spans across two countries, Uganda is the most popular destination for hiking the mountain.

How hard is Mount Rwenzori hiking?

Mount Rwenzori hiking is graded as moderate. Enthusiastic hikers are advised to have a good level of physical fitness and have a love of the outdoors to embark on this life-changing adventure of a lifetime.

Several trails provide the best chances of acclimatizing to Africa’s third-highest peak. However, you will need to be prepared for the effects of altitude sickness as you will be hiking at altitude.

The majority of hikers feel the effects of altitude, but with slow and steady ascents, coupled with staying hydrated and lots of acclimatization, it is actually possible to complete the different iconic routes.

Do I need a porter for Mount Rwenzori hiking?

It isn’t mandatory that all Mount Rwenzori hikers must have a porter/s, but it is recommended. These individuals are locals of the areas, hence conversant with the area and the hikes. They will provide support in hiking, carry your backpack and camera equipment, and help in meal preparation where required.

The easiest and most stress-free way to get in shape for Mount Rwenzori hiking is just walking. Dedicate at least three days a week to long hill walking, and you will use all the same muscles as you will on this unforgettable hike. Additionally, ensure that all the gear you will be taking with you is just right (this includes sturdy hiking boots).

Also, you can hike your local hills, and ensure to blend in some complementary exercises like walking lunges, weighted squats, or simply taking stairs instead of lifts while at home.

Best time to go for the Mount Rwenzori Hiking Adventure

All Mount Rwenzori hiking routes/trails are open all year round. However, the main hiking season runs from June to September. This time of the year is simply comfortable and perfect in the Mountains and offers the best conditions to hike.

The months of December, January, and February are magical, but expect windy conditions and cool temperatures.

The wet season, March, April, and May, is always avoided by hikers because the skies are not clear with maximum haze, and trails are muddy and slippery due to increased precipitation.

Generally, the dry season, June through September, is preferred for Mount Rwenzori hiking because it offers clearer skies and minimal haze. However, this season coincides with the peak hiking season, hence accommodation rates are sometimes higher, and some trails are crowded on some days.

Mount Rwenzori Hiking Trails

Three main routes/trails on Mount Rwenzori lead to the 5109-meter summit, and they include the Central Circuit Trail, Bukurungu Trail, and Kilembe Trail.

The Central Circuit Trail is the oldest and most popular for both novice and experienced hikers interested in venturing out to the highest peak of Africa’s third-highest Mountain. This Trail goes through at least five vegetation zones with magnificent encounters through tropical Valleys, gorges, and to the rugged Mount Stanley peak.

This Trail is surprisingly the shortest and easiest to the summit.

Also known as the “Southern circuit”, the Kilembe Trail is managed by the Rwenzori Trekking Services and was first discovered by Professor Scott Elliott in 1895. It was opened in 2009 after the establishment of new huts in the National Park boundaries.

Popular for being the longest route, Kilembe Trail provides enough time for acclimatization and provides one of the most jaw-dropping views- Glaciers, Lakes, flora, and fauna.

The Bukurungu Trail is perfect for hikers who enjoy wild nature, considering it provides views of four stunning Lakes (Irene, Mughuli, Bujuku, and Bukurungu). The Trail also goes through verdant vegetation, past Mountain Rivers and spectacular waterfalls, and is completed in 8 days.

For accommodation, hikers can expect camping with no established huts, which isn’t the case with the Kilembe and Central Circuit Trails. However, that shouldn’t scare you as the Camping areas are well organized, safe, and secure for comfortable and unforgettable stays.
