Bwindi is situated at the rim of the Rift Valley in southwestern Uganda. It features Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, an ancient rainforest that dates back over 25,000 years. The lush Bwindi Impenetrable Forest shelters more than 1000 species of flowering plants, 163 tree species, and 104 fern species. Geographically, the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park boundaries extend to cover districts of Kabale, Kanungu, and Kisoro. Bwindi was established in 1991, and in 1994, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bwindi offers single gorilla treks per day and expect to start your adventure in the morning after briefing.

Visitors get to know the rules and regulations for gorilla trekking, and the briefing session is led by a park official. The actual trek with gorillas begins at around 8:00 am and takes about 2-6 hours. The amazing part is that you have a maximum of 1 hour to spend face-to-face with a group of mountain gorillas. This special moment begins immediately after you have located a gorilla group that the park official allocated to you during the pre-trek briefing session.

After one hour, you can begin trekking back, and a gorilla trekking certificate is awarded to visitors. How to get there

By road: Getting to Bwindi by road can take you about 8-9 hours of driving. This is possible along the Entebbe or Kampala through Masaka-Mbarara to Kabale route. But tourists can also set off from Kigali and cross the Katuna or Chanika border to visit Bwindi, which is a 4 to 5-hour drive.
