Mgahinga shares its ecosystem with Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) and Virunga National Park (DRC). The three parks together form the Virunga Conservation Area — the heartland of mountain gorilla conservation in Africa. Unlike Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which is equatorial rainforest, Mgahinga is a high-altitude volcanic habitat with bamboo forests, open glades, and dramatic crater ridgelines.
Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga
Mgahinga is home to a single habituated gorilla family: the Nyakagyezi group. This makes Mgahinga distinct from Bwindi — where over 20 families are spread across four sectors — but also creates a more intimate, exclusive experience. Only 8 permits are issued per day for Nyakagyezi, meaning your group has the family entirely to itself.
The Nyakagyezi Gorilla Family
The Nyakagyezi family currently numbers around 10–12 individuals and is led by a dominant silverback named Mark. The family also has a second silverback (Bugingo) and a number of adult females with young infants, making encounters with the group particularly dynamic. The family is very well habituated — rangers have been working with them since 2012 — and encounters are typically calm and prolonged.
One characteristic unique to Nyakagyezi: the family ranges across the Uganda-Rwanda border. During the dry season, it occasionally crosses into Volcanoes National Park territory. If the family has moved into Rwanda on your trek day, UWA rangers coordinate with Rwandan authorities to ensure your trek proceeds — your Uganda permit remains valid.
What to Expect on the Trek
Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga follows the same format as Bwindi: briefing at the park HQ at 8:00am, followed by a guided trek with UWA rangers and habituated trackers to find the family.
- Difficulty: Moderate to challenging. The volcanic terrain is steep, and the altitude (starting at 2,227m) means thin air. Altitude acclimatisation of one day is recommended if arriving from sea level.
- Duration: Treks typically last 2–5 hours. The family’s altitude and position in the forest vary daily.
- Terrain: Rocky volcanic slopes, bamboo zones, open moorland near the crater rims. More exposed than Bwindi’s dense forest.

Golden Monkey Trekking in Mgahinga
Mgahinga is one of only two places on earth where you can trek golden monkeys — the other being Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. The Mgahinga golden monkey population lives in the park’s bamboo zones and is fully habituated to human presence.

- Experience: Golden monkeys are spectacularly colourful — orange-gold patches on a black body — and extremely acrobatic. They move fast through the bamboo canopy and frequently come very close to trekkers. A wonderful, high-energy counterpoint to the calm of gorilla trekking.
- Best time: Year-round, with the dry seasons (Jun–Sep, Dec–Feb) offering cleaner trails in the bamboo zones.
Most visitors to Mgahinga combine gorilla trekking (Day 1) with golden monkey trekking (Day 2) for a two-night stay — an extraordinarily rich primate experience.
Volcano Hiking in Mgahinga
Mgahinga takes its name from the Kinyarwanda word for the pile of stones used to clear farmland — but the volcanoes themselves are its defining feature. Three dormant volcanoes rise within the park:
Mt Sabinyo (3,645m) — Most Popular Hike
The most technical of Mgahinga’s three volcanoes, Sabinyo’s jagged ridge forms the border between Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC. The summit hike involves ladders and ropes on the final ascent — challenging but rewarding. From the top, you stand with one foot in each of three countries. Duration: 6–8 hours return. Permit: $40.
Mt Gahinga (3,474m)
A gentler, wetter hike through montane forest and bamboo to a marshy caldera at the summit. The crater holds a small swamp surrounded by giant lobelia. Duration: 4–6 hours. Permit: $40.
Mt Muhavura (4,127m)
The highest peak in the park and a serious mountain hike — the summit is above 4,000m and requires good fitness and acclimatisation. A small lake sits in the crater. Clear days offer panoramic views across Rwanda, Uganda, and the Congo. Duration: 8–10 hours. Permit: $40.
Batwa Cultural Experience
The Batwa pygmies — also called the Twa — were the original forest-dwelling inhabitants of Bwindi and Mgahinga before the parks were gazetted in 1991. Displaced from their ancestral land, Batwa communities now live near the park boundaries. The Batwa Trail is a guided cultural immersion led by Batwa elders through the forest, re-enacting traditional forest life: honey collection, fire-making, medicinal plant identification, and traditional hunting techniques.

Getting to Mgahinga
From Kampala (10–11 hours by road)
The drive from Kampala to Kisoro takes 9–11 hours via the Kabale–Kisoro highway. Most operators break the journey with a night in Kabale or at Lake Bunyonyi (1 hour before Kisoro). The route passes through Mbarara, Kabale town, and the scenic Kigezi highlands. The final section from Kisoro to the park gate is 10 km on a murram road.
Charter Flight (45 minutes from Entebbe)
Aerolink and other operators fly Entebbe–Kisoro daily. Charter flight costs approximately $200–$400 per person one way. From Kigali, Rwanda (3–4 hours)
Mgahinga is well-positioned for travellers combining Uganda gorilla trekking with Rwanda. Kigali to Kisoro takes 3–4 hours via the Cyanika border crossing. Many travellers do Rwanda gorilla trekking (Volcanoes NP) and Uganda gorilla trekking (Mgahinga) back-to-back on a single East Africa Tourist Visa ($100).

Best Time to Visit Mgahinga
Mgahinga can be visited year-round, but the dry seasons offer the most comfortable trekking conditions on the volcanic terrain:
- June–September: Primary dry season — firm trails, clear summit views, excellent photography. Peak season — book permits 3–5 months ahead.
- December–February: Secondary dry season — very good conditions, fewer visitors than June–September.
- March–May: Rainy season — trails can be muddy and slippery at altitude. Lower permit cost ($600). Fewer visitors.
