What Are the Virunga Mountains?
The Virunga Mountains are a chain of eight dormant and active volcanoes located along the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These mountains form part of the western branch of the East African Rift Valley and are among the most biologically important mountain ecosystems on Earth.
The Virunga Mountains spread across 8,000 square kilometres, serving as natural borders between Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The region is characterised by bamboo forests, crater lakes, dense montane forests, volcanic peaks and swamps.
The Eight Virunga Volcanoes
1. Mount Karisimbi (4,507 m)

Located on Rwanda's border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mount Karisimbi is the highest volcano in the Virunga Conservation Area at 4,507 metres above sea level. Named after the Kinyarwanda word for "white snow-like appearances", the summit offers panoramic views of the entire Virunga Massif. Its slopes are home to the Karisimbi gorilla family. The 3-Day Karisimbi hiking adventure includes an overnight on the slopes.
2. Mount Nyiragongo (3,470 m)
Located in Virunga National Park in North Kivu province, DRC, Mount Nyiragongo hosts the world's largest lava lake. The 3 Days Nyiragongo Volcano tour includes an overnight stay on the slopes, offering the extraordinary spectacle of glowing molten lava beneath the night sky.
3. Mount Nyamuragira (3,058 m)
Also in Virunga National Park, Mount Nyamuragira is Africa's most active volcano, having erupted over 40 times since the 19th century. Access is highly restricted due to the active nature of the volcano. It is a major centre for geological research and conservation.
4. Mount Mikeno (4,437 m)
The second highest volcano in the Virunga Mountains, Mount Mikeno stands at 4,437 metres and is located in Virunga National Park, DRC. Its slopes shelter endangered mountain gorillas, forest elephants, buffalos, and over 300 bird species. Tourism is currently limited in this region due to conservation priorities.
5. Mount Bisoke (3,711 m)
On the border of Rwanda and DRC, Mount Bisoke is one of the most popular day hikes in the Virunga Mountains. Hiked from Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, the trail passes through bamboo forests, rainforest, and giant heather before reaching the beautiful crater lake at the summit. Book our 1 Day Mount Bisoke hike or 3 Days Rwanda Gorillas & Mount Bisoke adventure.
6. Mount Sabyinyo (3,669 m)

Shared by Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC, Mount Sabyinyo is hiked from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda. Named after the "old man's worn teeth" due to its eroded ridges, reaching the summit means standing in three countries simultaneously. Wooden ladders ease the steep ascent and the peak rewards with views of Bwindi Forest, Mgahinga, and the Virunga and Volcanoes National Parks.
7. Mount Gahinga (3,474 m)
Hiked from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Mount Gahinga offers the easiest hike in Uganda's Virunga range, making it ideal for beginners and families. The trail passes through bamboo forests sheltering mountain gorillas and colobus monkeys. The summit contains a crater lake filled by a swamp.
8. Mount Muhabura (4,127 m)

Named after the local word for "guide", Mount Muhabura's conical shape is a striking landmark above Mgahinga. On the Uganda–Rwanda border, the summit offers spectacular views of the Virunga Mountains, gorilla parks, Lake Bunyonyi, and local communities across three countries. It can be hiked in one day and combined with gorilla trekking, the Batwa cultural trail, or golden monkey tracking.
Which Virunga Volcano Should You Climb?
Mount Gahinga is ideal for beginners; Mount Bisoke is perfect for a scenic day hike; Mount Sabyinyo offers an exciting cross-border adventure; Mount Muhabura challenges experienced hikers; and Mount Karisimbi is the ultimate two-day trekking expedition. For a geological thrill, Mount Nyiragongo's active lava lake is unmatched.
Best Time to Hike the Virunga Mountains
The volcanoes can be hiked throughout the year. However, the quality of your hiking experience varies with the season.
