About Budongo Forest Reserve

Budongo Forest covers 825 square kilometres in Masindi District, northwestern Uganda, bordering the southern edge of Murchison Falls National Park. It is Uganda’s largest ironwood-mahogany forest with over 600 chimpanzees, 9 other primate species, 360 bird species and 465 butterfly species.

Two trekking sectors operate inside Budongo:

• Kaniyo Pabidi — the main trekking sector managed by the National Forestry Authority. Most visitors trek here.
• Busingiro — the second sector, closer to Masindi town, quieter and less visited.

How Chimpanzee Trekking in Budongo Forest Works

Trekking departs at 8:00 AM daily. Groups are limited to 6 people per habituated community. A ranger guide leads the trek, tracking chimps by sound and smell through the mahogany undergrowth. Once located, you spend one hour with the group observing natural behaviour — feeding, grooming, playing and territorial displays.

Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Budongo

For a deeper encounter, the full-day habituation experience follows chimps from 6:00 AM as they leave their night nests through to dusk. You spend 6 to 8 hours with the same community watching behaviours a one-hour visit rarely captures — infant play, territorial patrols and tool use. The habituation experience at Budongo costs less than the equivalent at Kibale Forest National Park.

Primates

Is Budongo or Kibale better for chimpanzee trekking?

Kibale has more habituated chimps and a slightly higher encounter rate. Budongo costs $130 vs Kibale’s $250 and pairs naturally with Murchison Falls. If budget matters or you are visiting Murchison, Budongo is the smarter choice.

How long is the trek?

30 minutes to 4 hours to locate the chimps, then one hour with them. Allow a full morning.

What is the minimum age?

12 years. Children under 12 are not permitted due to trail demands and unpredictable chimpanzee behaviour.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes — groups are capped at 6 people. Book 4 to 6 weeks ahead during peak season.
