A 5 day Uganda safari itinerary is the sweet spot for combining Uganda’s two greatest wildlife experiences. Enjoy gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park  with comfortable travel days on each end. Five days gives you two dedicated primate trekking days, two transfer days through Uganda’s dramatic landscapes, and a full arrival day from Entebbe. This guide covers the day-by-day route, where to stay at every budget, what each activity costs and the practical details you need before booking.

5-Day Uganda Safari Day by Day

Day 1: Arrive Entebbe, Transfer to Bwindi

Fly into Entebbe International Airport (EBB). With five days, flying from Entebbe to Bwindi on Day 1 saves an entire driving day and is strongly recommended. Charter and scheduled flights to Kihihi Airstrip (Buhoma sector) or Kisoro Airstrip (Rushaga/Nkuringo sectors) take 75 minutes and cost $250–$350 each way. The aerial view of the western Rift Valley escarpment, the Rwenzori Mountains snowfields and the forest is extraordinary.

If budget requires driving, depart Entebbe by 7am — the nine-hour drive to Buhoma passes through Kampala, Masaka, Mbarara and Kabale. Arrive at your lodge by evening. Pre-trek briefing with your guide: 7:30am departure time, what to wear and bring, which gorilla family has been assigned.

Overnight near Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Budget: Buhoma Community Rest Camp. Mid-range: Mahogany Springs Lodge, Gorilla Safari Lodge. Luxury: Bwindi Lodge, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

5-Day Uganda Gorillas & Chimpanzee Trekking SafariThe highlight of this 5 day Uganda safari. Report to park headquarters at 7:30am. Uganda has over 20 habituated gorilla families in Bwindi, spread across four sectors. Your group of eight is assigned to one family; trek duration is one to six or more hours depending on the gorillas’ movements.

Bwindi’s forest is dense, ancient and often wrapped in mist,  the name means “impenetrable” and the terrain earns it. Hire a porter at the trailhead ($15–20) for bag carry and support on steep ground. When you reach the family, you have exactly one hour. Silverback males weigh up to 220kg; encounters at arm’s length in the forest are viscerally different from any zoo or documentary experience.

Back at the lodge by midday or early afternoon. Afternoon activity options:

Batwa Cultural Experience ($20–30 per person): The Batwa were Bwindi’s original forest inhabitants before the park was gazetted in 1991. Their cultural programme — fire making, honey hunting, traditional medicine — is one of the most authentic encounters in Uganda and provides important context for the conservation story behind gorilla trekking.

Bwindi Nature Walk: 1.5–3 hour guided walk through the forest edges. Good for forest birds (350+ species, 23 Albertine Rift endemics), butterflies and secondary vegetation.

Overnight: same lodge near Bwindi.

Day 3: Bwindi to Kibale Forest via Queen Elizabeth or Lake Bunyonyi

The transfer day north covers spectacular terrain. Two good route options:

Route A — via Queen Elizabeth National Park: Four to five hours from Bwindi north through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth NP. Ishasha is famous for tree-climbing lions — a small population of lions that rest in fig trees, unique in East Africa. A 1.5–2 hour game drive through Ishasha en route adds time but is genuinely worth it. Continue north through Queen Elizabeth and arrive at Kibale by mid-afternoon.

Route B — via Lake Bunyonyi: Stop for lunch at Lake Bunyonyi, Uganda’s deepest lake (900m+), set in a bowl of terraced hills near Kabale. Canoe hire, a walk around the lakeshore and fresh fish lunch at the lake make for an excellent midday break. Then continue north to Kibale (four hours from Bunyonyi).

Overnight near Kibale Forest. Budget: Kibale Forest Camp. Mid-range: Primate Lodge Kibale ($150–220), Kibale Guest Cottages ($80–120). Luxury: Kyaninga Lodge ($450–700, on a crater lake), Ndali Lodge ($350–550).

Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest

5-Day Uganda Gorillas & Chimpanzee Trekking SafariKibale Forest National Park is the best place in the world for chimpanzee trekking. The forest holds over 1,500 chimpanzees, the highest density of any forest in Africa. Five habituated chimpanzee communities are available for trekking; morning treks depart at 8am and afternoon treks at 2pm ($200 permit per person for standard trekking, or $250 for the full-day habituation experience).

Unlike gorilla trekking, chimpanzees move fast, travel in canopy and may split and re-form during an encounter. Once found, you have one hour. Kibale’s chimps behave more like wild animals than Bwindi’s gorillas,  encounters are noisier, faster and less predictable. The Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHE) at $250 gives you a full day with one family from dawn to dusk, including the morning nest abandonment and evening nesting — significantly more intimate and educational than the standard one-hour trek.

Afternoon: Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary ($10 entrance). A community-managed papyrus wetland 6km from the main gate. One of Uganda’s best birding spots — sitatunga antelope, red-tailed monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys and over 200 bird species including the great blue turaco and papyrus gonolek. Two-hour guided walk.

Overnight: same lodge near Kibale.

Day 5: Return to Entebbe

The final morning of this 5 day Uganda safari itinerary. If you booked a morning chimp trek but missed it on Day 4, it can be done today with an early start. Otherwise, the five-hour drive from Fort Portal (the town near Kibale) to Entebbe passes through Kampala and gives time for a lunch stop at the Equator crossing on the Kampala–Masaka highway — a popular photo stop with a demonstration of the Coriolis effect.

Arrive Entebbe in time for evening international departures. If your flight is the following morning, several good hotels near the airport: Protea Hotel Entebbe, Airport View Hotel, Imperial Resort Beach Hotel on Lake Victoria.

Best Time for a 5-Day Uganda Safari

June–August: Best conditions for both Bwindi and Kibale. Trails are firm, weather is reliably dry, and forest visibility is at its best. Book permits and lodges three to six months ahead.

December–February: The short dry season. Excellent trekking conditions and lower visitor numbers than the peak months. Christmas and New Year dates at luxury lodges (Kyaninga, Clouds) sell out early.

March–May and September–November: Wet season. Muddy trails in Bwindi — waterproof boots essential. Kibale is less affected by rain than Bwindi. Gorilla and chimp sightings are identical year-round. Lodge rates drop 20–35% and crowds are minimal. October and November are the best value months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5 days enough for a Uganda safari? Yes — five days is enough for gorilla trekking in Bwindi and chimp trekking in Kibale. It does not include Queen Elizabeth NP game drives; for those, you need seven days.

What is the difference between gorilla trekking and chimp trekking? Gorillas are slow-moving, ground-level and spend time eating and resting during your one-hour encounter. Chimps are fast, often high in the canopy, vocal and unpredictable. Both are one-hour encounters; the experiences are very different in character. The Kibale Habituation Experience ($250) gives a full day with chimps if you want deeper time.

Do I need two gorilla permits for a 5-day Uganda safari? No — this itinerary uses one gorilla permit ($700) in Bwindi on Day 2. A second gorilla permit could be added in the Rwanda Volcanoes NP if you extend the trip into Rwanda.

How fit do I need to be for this itinerary? Moderate fitness is sufficient for most gorilla families in Buhoma and Rushaga sectors. Ruhija and Nkuringo are more demanding. Chimp trekking in Kibale is easier terrain. Hiring a porter in Bwindi is strongly recommended regardless of fitness level.

Can I combine a 5-day Uganda safari with Zanzibar or Kenya? Yes — Entebbe connects to Nairobi (1 hour, multiple daily flights) which connects to Zanzibar, Mombasa and the Masai Mara. A popular extension: 5 days Uganda primates + 4 days Kenya Masai Mara game drives or 3 nights Zanzibar beach.
