Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is divided into four distinct gorilla trekking sectors: Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija, and Nkuringo. Each sector is geographically separate, has its own set of habituated gorilla families, a different trekking character, and its own accommodation options. Choosing the right sector is one of the most important planning decisions you will make for your Uganda gorilla safari.
Overview: Bwindi’s Four Gorilla Trekking Sectors
| Sector | Location | Altitude | Gorilla Families | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buhoma | Northern Bwindi | 1,560–2,600m | Mubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura, Katwe | First-timers, most accessible |
| Rushaga | Southern Bwindi | 1,900–2,400m | Nshongi, Mishaya, Bweza, Kahungye, Busingye, Rwigi + Habituation | Most gorilla families, habituation |
| Ruhija | Eastern Bwindi | 2,200–2,700m | Bitukura, Oruzogo, Kyaguriro, Mukiza | Research families, high-altitude |
| Nkuringo | Southwestern Bwindi | 1,900–2,500m | Nkuringo, Christmas, Posho | Remote, adventurous trek |
Buhoma Sector: The Northern Gateway
Buhoma is the oldest and most established gorilla trekking sector in Bwindi — and the most visited. It sits in northern Bwindi at an entrance altitude of around 1,560m, making it the lowest and most accessible sector by road from Kampala (approximately 7–9 hours).
Gorilla Families in Buhoma
- Mubare Family: Uganda’s first ever habituated gorilla family (1993), led by a silverback named Kanyonyi. One of the most relaxed and photographically rewarding families.
- Habinyanja Family: A large, active family with several silverbacks. Treks to Habinyanja can be short (30 minutes) or long (5 hours) depending on where the family has moved.
- Rushegura Family: Habituated from the Habinyanja group. Known for frequenting lower, more accessible areas of the forest.
- Katwe Family: More recently habituated, offering additional permits for Buhoma visitors.
What to Expect Trekking in Buhoma
Buhoma trails range from moderate to challenging depending on where the gorillas have moved. The forest floor here is lush with ferns and ancient trees draped in moss. Treks average 2–4 hours but can be as short as 30 minutes. The sector is well-served with a concentration of quality lodges including Buhoma Lodge, Gorilla Forest Camp, and Mahogany Springs.
Buhoma Accommodation
Buhoma has the widest range of accommodation in Bwindi — from luxury lodges to budget bandas. Notable options include Buhoma Lodge (mid-range), Gorilla Forest Camp (luxury), and Bwindi Lodge (upmarket). Book well ahead during peak season (June–September).
Rushaga Sector: Most Gorilla Families in Bwindi
Rushaga sits in southern Bwindi near the trading centre of Rubanda (Kabale District). It is the sector with the most habituated gorilla families in Bwindi, and the only location offering the full-day Gorilla Habituation Experience ($1,500/person).
Gorilla Families in Rushaga
- Nshongi Family: One of Bwindi’s largest families, with up to 25+ members. Seeing a group this size in their natural habitat is extraordinary.
- Kahungye Family: A medium-sized family that often stays in accessible areas of the forest.
- Mishaya Family: Led by a dominant silverback, known for energetic and dramatic encounters.
- Bweza Family: A smaller, peaceful family — often recommended for older or less physically fit trekkers.
- Busingye Family: Active and well-habituated, with frequent visibility in open glades.
- Rwigi Family: More recently habituated, offering additional permit slots.
- Habituation families: Two gorilla families in Rushaga are in the habituation process, open to visitors for a full-day ($1,500) experience unlike anywhere else in Africa.
Buhoma vs Rushaga: Which is Better?
Both sectors offer a genuine, world-class gorilla encounter. The key differences:
- Rushaga has more gorilla families — more permit slots available, especially useful in peak season.
- Buhoma has better-established infrastructure, a wider lodge choice, and easier road access from Kampala.
- Rushaga is better positioned for visitors combining Bwindi with Lake Mutanda, Kisoro, or Mgahinga.
- Rushaga is the only place offering the Gorilla Habituation Experience.
Ruhija Sector: High-Altitude Research Families
Ruhija sits in eastern Bwindi at the park’s highest elevations — 2,200–2,700m above sea level. It is less visited than Buhoma or Rushaga, partly because of its remote location (it requires a different approach road via Butogota) and partly because its gorilla families include research families tracked by the Makerere University Bwindi Research Station.
Gorilla Families in Ruhija
- Bitukura Family: One of Uganda’s largest and most relaxed gorilla families — up to 25 members, with multiple silverbacks. Excellent for photography.
- Oruzogo Family: A mid-sized family frequently visited by researchers. Habituation is stable and encounters are calm.
- Kyaguriro Family: A research family tracked by Makerere University — tourism visits are permitted but numbers are very limited.
- Mukiza Family: A more recently habituated family, adding further permit capacity to Ruhija.
What to Expect Trekking in Ruhija
Ruhija treks tend to be shorter in duration than Rushaga or Nkuringo but physically demanding because of the altitude. The forest at this elevation is darker, denser, and cooler — especially in the early morning. The sector is excellent for birding (Ruhija is famous for Albertine Rift endemics) and for those wanting a more remote feel. Accommodation is more limited — Ruhija has fewer lodges, with Ruhija Gorilla Camp and Gorilla Mist Camp among the main options.
Buhoma vs Ruhija: Key Differences
- Ruhija sits at higher altitude — cooler, sometimes mistier, more demanding physically.
- Ruhija families (especially Bitukura) tend to be larger and very well habituated.
- Buhoma is closer to Kampala (less driving) and has better lodge variety.
- Ruhija is better combined with a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park (reached via Ishasha).
Nkuringo Sector: The Remote Adventurer’s Choice
Nkuringo is the most remote sector in Bwindi, perched on a ridge overlooking the Congo basin on the southwestern side of the park. It offers a dramatically scenic but physically demanding gorilla trek — the descent into the forest from the trail head is steep, and the climb back is arduous. Nkuringo is for travellers who want an adventure.
Gorilla Families in Nkuringo
- Nkuringo Family: Habituated since 2004, led by Safari the silverback. Known for dramatic encounters in rugged terrain.
- Christmas Family: A splinter group from Nkuringo, offering additional trek permits.
- Posho Family: A newer habituation in Nkuringo’s territory.
What to Expect in Nkuringo
The Nkuringo trek begins with a steep descent into the forest and finishes with a challenging climb back up. Porters are strongly recommended — more so than any other sector. The payoff is extraordinary: views across the Congo, mist-draped volcanoes, and gorilla encounters in dramatic, vertical terrain. Accommodation includes Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge (one of Uganda’s finest eco-lodges) and a few smaller options.
Nkuringo is well-placed for visitors combining Bwindi with Lake Bunyonyi (30–40 minutes away) or crossing into Rwanda via the Kisoro border.
How to Choose Your Bwindi Sector
- First-time trekker, moderate fitness: Buhoma or Rushaga — both offer a well-supported experience on manageable terrain.
- Large family or group: Rushaga — most families available, most permit slots.
- Want the Habituation Experience: Rushaga only.
- Interested in birding too: Ruhija — Albertine Rift endemic birds are outstanding here.
- Want remote and adventurous: Nkuringo — dramatic scenery, fewer visitors.
- Combining with Lake Bunyonyi: Nkuringo or Rushaga (both close to Kisoro/Kabale).
- Combining with Queen Elizabeth NP: Ruhija or Buhoma — route via Ishasha.
- Tight budget: Buhoma or Rushaga — most budget accommodation options.
