Gorilla Families in Rushaga Sector
Rushaga currently hosts several habituated gorilla families available for trekking. Each family has its own social structure, personality, history, and territory within the forest.
Nshongi Gorilla Family
Named after River Nshongi where the gorilla family was first sighted, the Nshongi Gorilla Family is among the most famous groups ever habituated in Rushaga sector and the whole of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Nshongi was at one point one of the largest gorilla groups in Bwindi Forest.
However, the family size has gradually reduced due to splits by some silverbacks who choose to start new families. Today Nshongi gorilla family comprise of 34 members which include the silverback, adult females, infants and juveniles.
Mishaya Gorilla Family
Mishaya is yet another interesting gorilla family in Rushaga sector which split from Nhsongi family. The then energetic Mishaya silverback Gorilla broke up from Nshongi and started recruiting members from Nshongi and other families to form his own named “Mishaya”
Following the death of Mishaya Silverback, the family has been led by many other silverback Gorillas overtime. However, the family continues to thrive under new dominant silverbacks, maintaining strong family bonds.
According to the past travelers who have visited Mishaya, the family is known for being active and entertaining which makes an encounter with them magical!
Bweza Gorilla Family
Also, formerly part of Nshongi gorilla Family, Bweza is one of the most calm and friendly gorilla families in Rushaga sector. The family separated after internal social changes within the original Nshongi group. Bweza gorilla family is known for relaxed feeding sessions, gentle interactions among family members, and relatively peaceful behavior.
Bweza gorilla family comprise of 11 members led by Kakono Silverback. The family members include infants, black backs, juveniles and adult females.

Busingye Gorilla Family
Comprised of 12 members, Busingye gorilla family is one of the most peaceful gorilla groups in Rushaga sector. The family broke from Kahungye gorilla family when Busingye silverback chose to start his own family.
Busingye is an energetic group that frequently moves through different parts of the forest, making trekking both exciting and adventurous.

Kahungye gorilla family is currently having 10 members under the leadership of Ruziika silverback. An hour in the company of Kahungye gorilla family is an experience of its kind as you watch different family members playing different roles.
Bikingi Gorilla Family
The Bikingi Gorilla Family is primarily known for the Gorilla Habituation Experience, although it has gradually become one of the notable groups in Rushaga sector. The family broke from Kahungye family when Bikingi Silverback ran away with some members to start his family
Unlike fully habituated families, Bikingi is still undergoing habituation process and only travelers are allowed to visit it.
The family apparently has 10 members inclusive of the silverback, adult females, infants, juveniles and blackbacks.
Kutu Gorilla Family
The Kutu Gorilla Family is among the newer habituated gorilla groups in Rushaga led by Ndugu silverback. The family comprise of 20 family members including 8 adukt femals, 7 infants, 1 black back, 2 juveniles, 1 sub adult female and 1 silverback Gorilla

Rwigi Gorilla Family

Gorilla Trekking Guide in Rushaga
Just like in other gorilla regions, gorilla trekking in Rushags sector begins early morning. Travelers are gathered at the Rushaga park headquaters where they are registered, briefed and allocated specific gorilla families to visit
The real trek starts at around 8am where travelers are assigned armed ranger guides from the Uganda Wildlife Authority to escort them to and from the gorilla trekking adventure.
Trekking time varies depending on the gorilla family location, and hiking speed pf the travelers. Ranger guides move at the pace of the slowest person in the group.
You can spend between 2 to over 6 hours in the jungle. The allowed time with gorillas is strictly an hour in normal gorilla trekking and 4 hours in habituation experience. This time is counted from the time travelers meet the allocated gorilla family

How to Get to Rushaga Sector
Rushaga can be reached by road from Kampala or Entebbe in approximately nine to ten hours.
