Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is made up of four gorilla regions where trekking takes place.  Over 550 mountain gorillas in Bwindi Forest are shared among the four gorilla regions. Each gorilla region has an independent headquarters where gorilla registration, briefing, and gorilla family allocation take place.  When booking gorilla tours to Bwindi, tour operators book gorilla permits in the specific gorilla region depending  on the availability and the accommodation booked.

Spread on 331 square kilometers, Bwindi Forest National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site in southwestern Uganda housing half of the world’s total gorilla numbers.  The gorilla park comprise of dense forests, steep slopes, and dramatic valleys, providing the perfect habitat for these magnificent primates. The Buhoma Sector

Located in the northern part of Bwindi, Buhoma is the most famous region shelrting the oldest gorilla family (Mubare). It was the first area to open for gorilla tourism in 1993 and remains a popular choice for visitors due to its accessibility and established infrastructure. In addition to Mubare , Buhoma sector is a shelter for other gorilla  groups which include  Habinyanja, Rushegura, Muyambi, Binyindo and Katwe gorilla groups. Buhoma region can be easily reached from kabale and Kihihi and can easily combine with Queen Elizabeth national Park for the 5 days Uganda gorillas and wildlife safari. For flying gorilla tours, Buhoma is so close to Kihihi Airtsrip which make connectivity more easily

The Ruhija Sector

Situated in the eastern part of Bwindi, Ruhija is another popular gorilla region in Bwindi Impenetrable forest National Park.  Ruhija sector is hoem to four habituated gorilla groups which include Bitukura family, Oruzogo Family, Kyaguliro and Mukiza gorilla groups.  The places to stay in Ruhija sector include Kiho Goilla lodge, Bakiga Lodge and Agandi Gorilla lodge among others.  Other activities done in Ruhija include nature walking, community project tours, bord watching and scenic viewing among others

The Rushaga Sector

Located in the southern part of the park, Rushaga gorilla sector is famous for having the highest number of gorilla families and also a center of the experimental gorilla habituation experience.  The region is  located close to Cyanika border hence easily accessible for short Uganda gorilla gorilla tours starting and ending in Kigali Rwanda. The gorilla families in Rushaga sector include Nshongi, Mushaya, Bweza, Bikingi, Mucunguzi, Tindataine, Busingye, Rwigi and Kutu gorilla families. The popular lodges in Rushaga sector include Gorilla safari Lodge, Gorilla Valley Lodge, Rushaga Gorilla Camp and Four Gorillas Lodge among others. The Nkuringo Sector

Gorilla regions in bwindiNkuringo gorilla sector is also located i the southern part of the park and offers the most strenuous but arguably the most rewarding trekking experience. This sector is known for its steep slopes and challenging trails. Nkuringo is home to Nkuringo and Christmas gorilla groups.  The region is best accessed from kisoro . How to Choose a Gorilla region to  visit

The choice of which sector to visit depends on your preferences  and other factors which include the location of your accommodation, the preferred gorilla family and physical fitness.  Buhoma sector is highly highly recommended for first  time travelers. For adventures seekers,  Nkuringo sector offers the most challenging hiking experience. Rushaga sector has a high number of gorilla families hence gorilla permits  than any other region. Rushaga also is a centre of gorilla habituation  experience which allow travelers to spend four hours with the gorillas.  Ruhija sector also offers immersive treks worth trying.
