5-Day Kenya Safari Itinerary Day by Day
Day 1: Nairobi to the Masai Mara
Fly from Wilson Airport to the Masai Mara 40–45 minutes by scheduled flight on AirKenya, Safari link or Fly540. With five days a morning flight from Wilson gives you a full afternoon game drive in the Mara on arrival day. Afternoon drives (3:30–6:30pm) in the Masai Mara are consistently productive: the open grassland gives excellent visibility, and lion, cheetah, elephant and giraffe are typically encountered within the first hour. Alternatively, drive from Nairobi to Masai Mara rewarding you with the best enroute experiences
Overnight near the Masai Mara. Budget: Mara Simba Lodge, Base Camp Masai Mara. Mid-range: Ol Seki Hemingways ($350–550), Mara Serena Safari Lodge ($250–400). Luxury: Angama Mara ($1,200–1,800), Mahali Mzuri ($1,000–1,600).
Day 2: Full Day in the Masai Mara
Enjoy two guided game drives with a midday break at camp. The morning drive from 6am is the best period for big cat activity: lion on kills, cheetah hunting on the open plains, and leopard in the Talek River woodland. The afternoon drive from 3:30pm continues until after sunset, with a sundowner stop on the plains.
The Masai Mara National Reserve holds one of the highest densities of lion in Africa. Multiple prides cover overlapping territories across the Mara Triangle, the Talek area and the central plains. Cheetah sightings are frequent year-round. Leopard require patience but the open woodland gives better viewing than most habitats. The full Big Five is present.
Optional: Hot Air Balloon Safari ($450). Dawn balloon flight over the savannah, 45–60 minutes, followed by a champagne bush breakfast. Book through your lodge. Departs 5:30am; compatible with a normal Day 2 game drive schedule.
Overnight: same Masai Mara camp.
Day 3: Morning Drive, Fly to Amboseli
Final morning in the Mara (6:00–9:00am game drive), then breakfast and pack up. Flights from the Mara’s airstrips back to Wilson Airport depart mid-morning. From Wilson, connecting flights to Amboseli’s airstrip take 40 minutes and run twice daily on AirKenya and Safarilink. The transfer between Wilson and JKIA is 30 minutes; some operators run direct Mara–Amboseli flights via Wilson.
Arrive Amboseli by early to mid-afternoon. Check in to your lodge and take an afternoon game drive (2 hours) before sunset. Amboseli National Park sits at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro on the Kenya–Tanzania border. Kilimanjaro’s summit (5,895m) is 50km south; on clear days — typically early mornings before cloud builds — the snow-capped peak rises dramatically above the flat acacia savannah and the famous Amboseli swamps.
Amboseli is most famous for its elephant herds. The park holds some of the largest and best-researched elephant families in Africa, habituated to vehicles after decades of study. Elephant encounters at very close range, with Kilimanjaro as backdrop, produce some of the most iconic wildlife photographs in Kenya.
Overnight in Amboseli. Budget: Kibo Safari Camp ($100–150), Amboseli Sentrim Camp ($80–130). Mid-range: Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge ($200–340), Ol Tukai Lodge ($180–290). Luxury: Tortilis Camp ($600–950), andBeyond Kichwa Tembo Amboseli ($700–1,100).
Day 4: Full Day in Amboseli
A full day in Amboseli’s varied habitat: open grass plains, acacia woodland, seasonal swamps and the papyrus marshes of the Enkongo Narok and Olokenya swamps. The swamps are fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro’s glaciers and are permanent water sources even during severe droughts — they draw wildlife from across the ecosystem.
Morning drive (6:00–9:30am): Kilimanjaro is clearest at dawn before cloud builds. The elephant families move between the swamps and the open plains at first light. Lion and cheetah are active on the grass plains. Large herds of zebra, wildebeest and buffalo concentrate near the swamp edges.
Afternoon drive (3:30–6:30pm): The Observation Hill (a small volcanic cone near the centre of the park) gives a 360° view of the entire park and is worth visiting for the panorama. From the hill, the scale of the elephant activity around the swamps — hundreds of animals in sight simultaneously — is fully visible. Sunset with Kilimanjaro in the background is one of Kenya’s iconic views.
Amboseli’s bird diversity is also high: over 400 species including large concentrations of waterbirds in the swamps — pelicans, storks, spoonbills, herons — and raptors on the acacia woodland edges.
Overnight: same Amboseli lodge.
Day 5: Morning Drive and Return to Nairobi
Final morning game drive in Amboseli (6:00–9:00am) targeting the elephant herds at the swamp edges in the early light. After breakfast, drive or fly back to Nairobi. The drive from Amboseli to Nairobi takes 3.5–4 hours via Namanga and the A104 road; the flight takes 40 minutes from Amboseli airstrip to Wilson Airport.
If time allows before your international departure, Nairobi National Park borders the city’s southern edge and is the only national park in the world within a capital city. A 2–3 hour game drive on the way in from Wilson Airport is possible and often productive — lion, cheetah, rhino, giraffe and buffalo against a backdrop of the Nairobi skyline.
Best Time for a 5-Day Kenya Safari
July–October: Best for the Masai Mara migration and excellent year-round game in Amboseli. The Mara river crossings (August–September) are the headline event. Amboseli is driest and most productive for wildlife September–October after the short migration has passed through the Mara.
January–March: Excellent game across both parks. Amboseli’s elephants are active year-round and this is a quieter period with good lodge value. Kilimanjaro is often clear in January before the rains. The Mara has its resident prides and large populations of resident herbivores throughout.
April–June: Green season. Lodges at 30–50% of peak rates. The Mara’s grassland is lush and the animals are still all there. Amboseli’s swamps are full. Best value period for this itinerary if wildebeest river crossings are not the priority.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 5 days enough for a Kenya safari? Five days comfortably covers the Masai Mara and Amboseli — the two most visited parks. For a third park (Lake Nakuru or Samburu), extend to seven days.
What is Amboseli National Park known for? Amboseli is famous for three things: large habituated elephant herds, some of the best elephant photography in Africa, and views of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is a smaller park than the Mara (392km²) with very different habitat — semi-arid plains and permanent swamps fed by Kilimanjaro’s glacial meltwater.
Should I fly between the Masai Mara and Amboseli or drive? Fly if budget allows — the drive between the two parks via Nairobi takes the better part of a day. Internal flights cost $150–250 per leg and most operators offer Mara–Amboseli connections via Wilson Airport. Flying preserves your game time.
Can I see Kilimanjaro from Amboseli? Yes — on clear days (typically early morning before cloud builds by 9–10am) Kilimanjaro’s summit is clearly visible 50km to the south. January, February and September are the clearest months. Cloud cover in the afternoon is normal and expected.
Can I combine a 5-day Kenya safari with Uganda gorillas? Yes — Nairobi and Entebbe are 1 hour apart by air. A popular pairing: 5 days Kenya Masai Mara + Amboseli + 3–5 days Uganda gorilla and chimp trekking. Nairobi connects to Entebbe on Kenya Airways, RwandAir and Ethiopian Airlines multiple times daily.
