Why Kenya Tops Every Safari Guide
Kenya has the most developed safari infrastructure in Africa, making it the most accessible first safari destination. Nairobi is a major international hub with direct flights from Europe, the Middle East and the US. Parks are well-managed and the wildlife is genuinely world-class — Kenya has all of the Big Five, the world’s greatest wildebeest migration, some of Africa’s best predator concentrations, and a coastline that rivals the Seychelles. See our Uganda vs Kenya safari comparison if you are choosing between the two.
The Masai Mara
The Masai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s most famous and most visited wildlife destination — and for good reason. The Mara’s open grassland supports the highest density of big cats in Africa year-round, with lions, leopards and cheetahs all reliably seen. From July to October the reserve hosts the wildebeest migration river crossings — 1.5 million animals crossing the Mara River between Tanzania and Kenya.

Amboseli National Park
Amboseli National Park offers the most iconic photography in Africa: massive-tusked bull elephants moving against the white backdrop of Kilimanjaro on a clear morning. The park has excellent elephant viewing year-round (it has one of Africa’s most studied elephant populations) and reliable big cat sightings. Amboseli is 4 hours from Nairobi by road and is often combined with Tsavo for a 5–7 day circuit.
Tsavo: Kenya’s Largest National Park
Tsavo is Kenya’s largest protected area, divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Tsavo National Park is known for its red elephants (stained red from the laterite soil), large prides of lions and vast unspoilt wilderness. Tsavo East is flatter and drier; Tsavo West is more dramatic with rivers, swamps and the Mzima Springs. Both are less crowded than the Mara and offer excellent value.
Samburu, Laikipia and the North
Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya is known for its uniquely adapted wildlife species: the Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich — all found here but not in southern Kenya parks. Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia is home to Africa’s last two northern white rhinos and excellent lion, leopard and chimpanzee (the only chimp sanctuary in East Africa). Aberdare National Park and Lake Nakuru complete a classic northern circuit.
Nairobi: More Than a Transit City
Most visitors spend at least one night in Nairobi — and it rewards more time than most give it. The Nairobi National Park is the only game reserve in the world inside a capital city, with lions, rhinos and giraffes against an urban skyline. The Nairobi city tour guide covers the Giraffe Centre, the Elephant Orphanage, Karen Blixen Museum, the Maasai Market and the best places to eat. Day trips from Nairobi include Hell’s Gate, Lake Naivasha and the Great Rift Valley. See Hell’s Gate National Park for cycling through a gorge among wildlife with no vehicle required.
The Kenya Coast: Diani, Mombasa and Watamu
Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast is one of Africa’s best beaches and a natural extension of any Kenya safari. Diani Beach south of Mombasa is the most beautiful — a 17km stretch of white sand backed by palm trees, with world-class snorkelling and diving. Mombasa has Fort Jesus (a UNESCO site), the old town and the best Swahili seafood on the coast. Watamu Marine Park in the north is one of East Africa’s best dive sites. The best Diani Beach excursions cover whale shark snorkelling, colobus monkey walks and kite surfing.
Birding, Hiking and Other Activities
Kenya has over 1,000 bird species — see our Kenya birding safaris guide. Mount Kenya hiking offers technical routes to Point Lenana (4,985m) and is a serious mountaineering objective. Cultural safaris in Kenya include Maasai village visits, beadwork workshops and camel treks in Samburu. The top 10 things to do in Kenya covers the full range.
