The family was named after Mubare Hills, where the group was first identified. Before tourism began, trackers and researchers spent several years gradually introducing the gorillas to the presence of humans.

Habinyanja Gorilla Family
Formed after spitting from the Habinyanja gorilla family, Rushegura gorilla family is yet another interesting gorilla group in Buhoma sector if Bwindi Forest National Park. Habinyanja is one of the largest gorilla groups in Buhoma having over 18 members comprised of the silverback, black back, adult females and black backs.
The name Habinyanja was derived from a “water place” in reference to the swamp areas where the gorilla family was first sighted. Interestingly, Habinyanja is one of the easy to trek gorilla families loved by aged and travelers with physical challenges
Rushegura Gorilla Family
The Rushegura Gorilla Family separated from the Habinyanja family when one dominant silverback chose to establish a new group. Interestingly over the years, Rushegura has expanded and is one of the popular gorilla families in Buhoma sector.
This family is widely appreciated for its calm temperament and relatively stable social structure. At times, Rushagura gorilla family comes close to the buhoma trailhead making it easy to find. Katwe Gorilla Family

Travelers are registered and briefed on the dos and donts of gorilla trekking and what to expect in general. Travelers are also put in groups of eight people per group
Each group is then assigned a specific gorilla family to visit and the main adventure begins in the company of armed ranger guides from Uganda Wildlife Authority
Experienced trackers leave before sunrise to locate the gorillas, while ranger guides lead visitors through the rainforest using information shared by the tracking teams.
Depending on the gorillas’ location, the trek may last anywhere from one to six hours.
Once the gorillas are found, visitors spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat while maintaining the recommended viewing distance.
