Volcanoes National Park in northwest Rwanda is one of the most extraordinary wildlife destinations on earth. It is home to more than a third of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, and a gorilla trekking permit here is among the most sought-after wildlife experiences in Africa. This complete guide covers everything you need to know about visiting Volcanoes National Park from gorilla trekking and the Dian Fossey trail to golden monkey tracking, lodges, and practical travel tips.

Where is Volcanoes National Park?

Volcanoes National Park is located in the Virunga Massif in northwestern Rwanda, bordering Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. It covers 160 km² of montane rainforest and bamboo forest on the slopes of six dormant volcanoes: Karisimbi (4,507m — the highest), Bisoke (3,711m), Muhabura (4,127m), Gahinga (3,474m), Sabyinyo (3,634m), and Mikeno (which lies mostly in DRC). The park headquarters is at Kinigi, about 17 km from Musanze (Ruhengeri).

The drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours on well-maintained roads. Most visitors arrive the afternoon before their trekking day to be rested for the early morning briefing.

Mountain Gorillas of Volcanoes National Park

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National ParkVolcanoes National Park protects approximately 12 habituated mountain gorilla families, with more in different stages of habituation. The park is part of the wider Virunga Conservation Area shared with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda) and Virunga National Park (DRC). The mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) is a critically endangered subspecies with a total wild population of around 1,063 individuals as of the latest census.

Notable gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park include:

  • Susa Group — one of the largest gorilla families ever habituated, made famous by Dian Fossey’s research. Now split into Susa A and Susa B (Karisimbi Group)
  • Amahoro Group — known for its peaceful, gentle nature; the name “Amahoro” means peace in Kinyarwanda
  • Agashya Group (Group 13) — led by one of the park’s most impressive silverbacks
  • Kwitonda Group — originally from DRC, now resident in Rwanda. Named after a silverback whose name means “humble one”
  • Umubano Group — meaning “living together”, formed after a split from the Amahoro group
  • Hirwa Group — “lucky one” in Kinyarwanda; known for having had twins, a rare occurrence in gorillas
  • Sabyinyo Group — one of the easiest treks as the family resides at lower altitude near the volcanoes’ base
  • Ugyisha Group — one of the newer habituated families

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

The Trekking Experience

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park begins at the Kinigi Park Headquarters with a 7:00 AM briefing. Rangers and trackers assign visitor groups (maximum 8 people per gorilla family per day) based on fitness levels and the families’ locations. The trek itself can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on how high up the volcano the gorilla family has moved overnight.

Once you reach the gorillas, you spend exactly one hour in their presence , an intensely moving experience as these magnificent animals go about their daily lives barely metres away. Silverbacks can weigh over 200kg, yet the encounter is peaceful and utterly absorbing. You may watch the silverback feeding, juveniles playing, or a mother nursing her infant.

Gorilla Trekking Permit Cost Rwanda

A Rwanda gorilla trekking permit costs USD 1,500 per person for a standard gorilla trek. Permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and are limited to 8 people per habituated gorilla family per day. The revenue directly funds gorilla conservation and supports local communities around the park.

Rwanda also offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience — a full-day (4-hour) visit with a gorilla family in the process of becoming habituated to humans. Permit cost: USD 1,500. This is for a different gorilla family and offers a longer, more intimate experience as the group is still in its early habituation phase.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Gorilla trekking is possible year-round in Volcanoes National Park. The two main seasons are:

  • June to September (long dry season) — the most popular period. Trails are drier and easier to navigate, visibility in the forest is better, and conditions are generally more comfortable. Book permits 6–12 months in advance for this window
  • December to February (short dry season) — another excellent period with better conditions than the rainy seasons
  • March to May (long rains) — lush and green, with fewer visitors and slightly easier permit availability. The forest is beautiful but trails are muddy. Still entirely worthwhile
  • October to November (short rains) — similar to March–May, with some rain but manageable trekking

The gorillas are present year-round — mountain gorillas do not migrate and the question is only about trail conditions, not gorilla availability.

Other Activities in Volcanoes National Park

Golden Monkey Trekking

Golden monkey trekking in VolcanoesVolcanoes National Park is one of only two places in the world where you can track the golden monkey (Cercopithecus kandti), a critically endangered primate endemic to the Virunga Massif. Golden monkeys live in the bamboo forest at the base of the volcanoes. A golden monkey trekking permit costs USD 100 per person and offers one hour with a habituated troop of these spectacularly colourful primates. The trek is generally shorter and easier than gorilla trekking and makes an excellent second-day activity or a gentler alternative for guests not doing the full gorilla trek.

Dian Fossey Tomb and Karisoke Research Centre

One of the most moving hikes in Volcanoes National Park leads to the Karisoke Research Centre ruins and the tomb of Dr Dian Fossey, the American primatologist whose 18-year study of mountain gorillas in the Virungas transformed our understanding of great apes and inspired a global conservation movement. Fossey was murdered at Karisoke in 1985 and is buried beside her favourite gorilla, Digit, at the research site. The hike takes approximately 3 to 4 hours return and passes through bamboo and Hagenia forest. Permit: included in the Volcanoes National Park entry. A guide is required.

Volcano Hiking

Four of the volcanoes within Volcanoes National Park are accessible for guided climbs:

  • Mount Bisoke (3,711m) — a full-day hike (6–8 hours return) to the stunning crater lake at the summit. One of the most popular hikes in the park. Permit: USD 75 per person
  • Mount Karisimbi (4,507m) — Rwanda’s highest volcano and the highest of the Virungas. A challenging 2-day summit hike with camping on the mountain. Permit: USD 200 per person. Spectacular views across the Virunga Massif
  • Mount Sabyinyo (3,634m) — a demanding ridge hike with three peaks; from the summit you can stand with one foot in Rwanda, one in Uganda, and one in DRC. Permit: USD 75 per person
  • Mount Gahinga (3,474m) — a full-day hike through bamboo forest to a swampy crater at the summit. Permit: USD 75 per person

Cultural Village Visits

The Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village near the park offers an engaging introduction to traditional Rwandan culture — including dance performances, traditional cooking demonstrations, archery, and interactions with former poachers who now work as cultural guides and conservation ambassadors. This is often included as an afternoon activity on the day of gorilla trekking.

Bird Watching

Volcanoes National Park sits within one of Africa’s most important birding zones. Over 200 bird species have been recorded, including 29 Albertine Rift endemic species. Notable species include the rare Grauer’s rush warbler, Rwenzori double-collared sunbird, handsome francolin, and Rwenzori turaco. The bamboo forest is particularly productive for Afromontane specialists.

Practical Tips for Volcanoes National Park

  • Arrive the day before your trek — treks begin at 7:00 AM and the drive from Kigali is 2.5–3 hours. Stay near the park the night before
  • Wear long sleeves and long trousers — the forest has stinging nettles. Thick gardening gloves are provided but your own lightweight gloves are useful
  • Hire a porter — strongly recommended for steep sections, particularly on descents. Porters are community members and your fee is direct livelihood support
  • Bring 2 litres of water and snacks — treks can last from 30 minutes to 4 hours
  • Camera settings — set to continuous shooting and high ISO before you enter the forest. Flash photography is strictly prohibited. A 70–200mm lens works well for portraits at the 7m minimum distance
  • Plastic bags are banned in Rwanda — do not bring plastic carrier bags. Use a daypack or fabric bag
  • Wear a mask near gorillas — required within 7m of the gorilla family. Provided at the briefing but bring your own for comfort
  • Do not trek if you are unwell — respiratory illnesses can be transmitted to gorillas. Rwanda Development Board may ask you to step aside and issue a permit transfer or refund credit if you are visibly ill
