This Rwanda safari guide covers everything Superfine Safaris knows about planning a trip to one of Africa’s most extraordinary destinations. Rwanda is small — you can drive from one end to the other in four hours, yet it holds mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, Africa’s oldest rainforest, a fully recovered Big Five reserve, and a capital city that consistently ranks as the safest and cleanest in Africa. Use this Rwanda safari guide to understand the parks, the permit system, the costs and the logistics, with every section linked to a deeper guide written by our team of specialists who operate here year-round.
Why Rwanda Belongs on Your Safari List
Rwanda is not a destination you stumble across. People come here specifically for the gorillas, and they leave having discovered an entire country that surprises them at every turn. The roads are smooth, the parks are well-managed, the cities are clean and safe, and the warmth of Rwandan hospitality is something our clients mention more than almost any other detail. A three-park Rwanda circuit, Volcanoes, Nyungwe and Akagera, covers primates, ancient forest, and classic savannah Big Five in a single trip of eight to ten days.
What sets Rwanda apart from its neighbours is the permit system. Rwanda’s gorilla permits cost USD 1,500 per person per trek, significantly more than Uganda’s USD 800. That premium buys you a smaller group size (maximum eight trekkers per gorilla family), higher-end lodge infrastructure in the Volcanoes area, and the fastest international connections in the region, Kigali’s Bugesera Airport is served by direct flights from London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Dubai, Nairobi and Addis Ababa. For many of our international clients, the price premium is worth it purely for the time saved. See our comparison of gorilla trekking in Uganda vs Rwanda if you are still deciding between the two.
Rwanda Safari Guide to Volcanoes National Park and Gorilla Trekking
Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda’s crown jewel and the reason most visitors come to the country. The park protects the Rwandan slopes of the Virunga volcano chain — eight volcanoes straddling the border with Uganda and the DRC and is home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. As of 2027 the park has twelve habituated gorilla families available for trekking, each visited by a maximum of eight tourists per day.
Treks depart from the park headquarters in Kinigi at 07:00 every morning. Groups are assigned to a gorilla family based on fitness level and permit availability. The trek itself takes anywhere from thirty minutes to six hours to reach the gorillas, depending on the family’s overnight location. Once found, you have exactly one hour with them — a rule enforced strictly to protect the gorillas’ health. It is, without question, one of the most profound wildlife experiences on the planet.
Beyond gorilla trekking, Volcanoes NP offers golden monkey trekking, Dian Fossey Tomb hike, and guided volcano climbs. See our full Volcanoes National Park guide for everything you need to know.

Nyungwe Forest National Park
Nyungwe Forest is one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse rainforests, covering 1,020 square kilometres of montane forest in south-west Rwanda. It is home to thirteen primate species including chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys and the striking black-and-white Angola colobus that gather in troops of several hundred. For birders, Nyungwe’s 300+ bird species include 27 Albertine Rift endemics found nowhere else on Earth.
The headline experience is chimpanzee trekking, which operates from two bases — Cyamudongo and the main forest. The canopy walkway, suspended 70 metres above the forest floor and stretching 200 metres between trees, is one of the most distinctive wildlife viewpoints in Africa. Waterfall hikes, primate walks and birding trails round out a park that easily fills three to four days. Most Rwanda safari itineraries place Nyungwe between Kigali and the shores of Lake Kivu, making it a natural overnight stop on the way to Volcanoes NP via the western route.

Akagera National Park
Akagera is Rwanda’s only savannah park and one of the great conservation comeback stories in Africa. Devastated by conflict and poaching in the 1990s, the park has been transformed since 2009 through a partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks. Lions were reintroduced in 2015 from South Africa. Black rhinos followed in 2017. Today Akagera offers a genuine Big Five safari, lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, and both white and black rhino alongside extraordinary birdlife (over 480 species) and one of East Africa’s best papyrus boat safaris on Lake Ihema.
Akagera sits three hours east of Kigali on the Tanzania border. It makes a natural bookend to a Rwanda gorilla trip: fly in, spend a day in Kigali, drive to Akagera for two nights, return to Kigali, then transfer to Musanze for Volcanoes NP. This classic east-west Rwanda circuit works for seven to nine days and is one of our most requested Rwanda itineraries at Superfine Safaris.

Kigali City
Kigali is unlike any other African capital. The city is clean, orderly, and genuinely safe to walk at night — qualities that take first-time visitors by surprise. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a sobering and essential experience that gives deep context to the country’s remarkable transformation in the three decades since 1994. Beyond the memorial, Kigali has excellent restaurants, vibrant craft markets, a growing contemporary art scene, and more good hotels per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in East Africa.
Most Rwanda safaris begin and end in Kigali. We recommend allowing at least one full day here, both on arrival and departure, to explore the city properly. The drive from Kigali to Musanze (gateway to Volcanoes NP) takes 2.5 hours through the green volcanic highlands. The drive to Akagera takes 3 hours east.

Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s Great Lakes, stretching 90 kilometres along Rwanda’s western border with the DRC. The town of Gisenyi (now Rubavu) in the north and Cyangugu (Rusizi) in the south offer lakeside beaches, boat trips to islands, kayaking, and a gentler pace that contrasts beautifully with the intensity of gorilla trekking. Many of our Rwanda itineraries include one night on Lake Kivu, usually at Gisenyi before the drive south to Nyungwe.

Rwanda Safari Guide to Volcano Hiking in the Virungas
The Virunga volcanoes offer some of the most dramatic high-altitude hiking in Africa. Five volcanoes are accessible from Rwanda: Bisoke (3,711m, 6–7 hrs round trip), Karisimbi (4,507m, 2-day summit climb), Muhabura (4,127m, 8–9 hrs), Sabyinyo (3,634m, 7–8 hrs) and Gahinga (3,474m, 6–7 hrs). All hikes are done with a mandatory Rwanda Development Board guide and ranger escort. Karisimbi, the highest and longest, requires a camping permit and overnight on the mountain.
Rwanda’s most popular volcano hike: 6 hours to the crater lake summit.
Rwanda’s highest peak: a 2-day 4,507m summit climb from Volcanoes NP.

Rwanda Safari Guide: Planning Essentials
Rwanda is one of the easiest countries in Africa to visit independently, but gorilla trekking permits require advance booking and a reliable logistics chain around them. Here is what you need to plan.
Full breakdown: gorilla permit (USD 1,500), lodge tiers from budget guesthouses to Singita, Nyungwe and Akagera fees, and sample 4-day and 8-day budgets.
Gorilla Permit Booking
Rwanda gorilla permits cost USD 1,500 per person per trek, issued by the Rwanda Development Board. Permits for the peak months — June to September and December to February — sell out six to twelve months in advance. We advise booking at least six months ahead for any June–September trip. Superfine Safaris handles the full permit booking process as part of your itinerary — contact us to check availability for your dates.
Best Time to Visit Rwanda
Gorilla trekking runs year-round, but two dry seasons offer the most comfortable conditions. The long dry season (June to September) is the most popular, with clear highland weather and firm forest tracks. The short dry season (December to February) is excellent and significantly less crowded. The rainy seasons (March to May and October to November) bring lower permit availability, lush green forest, and some of the best photography conditions — fog, mist and dramatic light are common. See our best time to visit Rwanda guide for a month-by-month breakdown.

Getting to Rwanda: Flights and Entry Points
Kigali International Airport (KGL, officially Bugesera International Airport) is the main entry point and is well served by international carriers. Direct or one-stop routes operate from London Heathrow (RwandAir, 8.5 hrs direct), Brussels (Brussels Airlines), Amsterdam (KLM), Dubai (RwandAir/Emirates), Doha (Qatar Airways), Nairobi (multiple, 1 hr), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian, 2.5 hrs), and Dar es Salaam. From North America and Australia, the most common routing is via Nairobi, Addis Ababa or Dubai.
Overland entry from Uganda: Many Superfine Safaris clients combine Rwanda with a Uganda gorilla trek, crossing the border at Katuna/Gatuna (2.5 hours south of Kampala, 2.5 hours north of Kigali) or entering Bwindi via the Cyanika border near Kisoro. This cross-border combination is one of our most popular itineraries and can be done in 8–12 days covering both countries. See our guide to driving from Kigali to Bwindi Forest for the logistics.
Rwanda Visa
Rwanda operates one of the most traveller-friendly visa regimes in Africa. Citizens of African Union member states enter visa-free. Most other nationalities (including the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and the EU) can obtain a visa on arrival at Kigali Airport or apply for an e-Visa in advance for USD 50. The e-Visa process takes 72 hours online. See our Rwanda visa requirements guide for the full list of exemptions and the application process.
