8 Days Rwanda Gorillas and Wildlife safari

WHAT TO DO AT AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

Akagera National Park in Rwanda is a stunning destination for wildlife lovers, photographers, and anyone looking to immerse themselves in nature. Located in the eastern part of the country along the border with Tanzania, it’s Rwanda’s only Big Five safari park and offers a more traditional savannah safari experience. A number of tour activities and attractions make this park outstanding especially for those seeking adventure in Rwanda. Here we share the major activities to do at the Akagera National Park.

  1. Game Viewing

Morning or Full-day Game Drives allow you spot the Big Five including lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos. Other wildlife seen here includes zebras, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, baboons, and over 500 bird species. It is always advisable for you to go with a park guide in a 4×4 vehicle to make the trip more adventurous.

  1. Boat Trip on Lake Ihema

Great for spotting hippos, crocodiles, and birds (especially during the late afternoon). A boat ride at Lake Ihema is undoubtedly one of the most peaceful and scenic activities in the park. Often includes up-close views of water birds like kingfishers, fish eagles, and herons.

  1. Guided Nature Walks

Enjoy guided nature walks in the park led by knowledgeable ranger guides. Nature walks give you an opportunity to learn about smaller flora and fauna, insects, and birdlife. This is the best option if you want a more intimate connection with the environment.

  1. Bird Watching

Akagera is a birding paradise with over 500 species. Special species include the Shoebill stork, African fish eagle, papyrus gonolek, and grey crowned crane. This experience is best with a specialized birding guide.

  1. Enjoy the Scenic Landscapes

Akagera is not just wildlife, its rolling hills, savannahs, swamps, and lakes are breathtaking. Visit the Kilala plains for wide-open savannah views and large herds of wildlife.

  1. Night Game Drive

Night drives give a chance to see nocturnal animals like civets, hyenas, leopards, and bush babies. This activity must be arranged with park guides or through your lodge.

  1. Photography Safari

The golden light of Akagera at sunrise and sunset is perfect for photography. You’ll find opportunities for both wildlife and landscape shots.

  1. Fishing (with a permit)

Fishing can be done on Lake Shakani. Bring your own fishing equipment or inquire locally. You can even cook your catch by the lake to make the experience more exciting.
