Rwanda has one of the most welcoming visa policies in Africa, and getting your Rwanda visa sorted takes less time and effort than most other African destinations. Part of our Rwanda Safari Guide 2027 — the complete resource for gorilla trekking, Volcanoes NP, Nyungwe Forest, Akagera Big Five and practical planning.

Do You Need a Rwanda Visa?

Rwanda operates one of the most open entry policies on the continent. Citizens of all 55 African Union member states can enter Rwanda without a visa and stay for up to 30 days. This covers every African country, making Rwanda visa-free across the entire continent.

For visitors arriving from outside Africa — including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Australia, Canada, Japan, and most other nations — a Rwanda visa is required. The good news is that Rwanda processes visas quickly and the online application system is genuinely straightforward. Most visitors receive their Rwanda visa approval within 24 to 72 hours of applying online.

Rwanda Visa Options: Which One Is Right for You?

There are four Rwanda visa types available depending on how you are travelling and where else you plan to visit in East Africa.

Single Entry Rwanda Visa

Rwanda Visa ApplicationThe standard Rwanda visa for a single visit. Allows one entry into Rwanda with a stay of up to 30 days, extendable to 90 days in-country at the Directorate General of Immigration offices in Kigali. Cost: USD 50. This is the right choice for visitors spending their entire trip in Rwanda before leaving.

Multiple Entry Rwanda Visa

For visitors who will cross in and out of Rwanda more than once — typically those on combined Uganda-Rwanda itineraries who cross the border in both directions. Allows multiple entries within a 90-day validity, with each stay up to 30 days. Cost: USD 70.

East Africa Tourist Visa (Rwanda + Uganda + Kenya)

The East Africa Tourist Visa is the single best-value option for visitors combining Rwanda with Uganda and Kenya. One visa covers all three countries with multiple-entry access. Cost: USD 100 total — less than the cost of two single-entry visas purchased separately.

This visa is the standard choice for guests on combined gorilla trekking itineraries — for example, trekking in Bwindi (Uganda) and then crossing to Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) on the same trip. You can apply for the East Africa Tourist Visa through Rwanda’s immigration portal, Uganda’s e-immigration portal, or Kenya’s eCitizen portal. Whichever country you apply through, the visa is valid for all three.

Note: the East Africa Tourist Visa does not include Tanzania. If your itinerary extends into Tanzania, you will need a separate Tanzania visa in addition. For a comparison of visa options across the region, see our guides to the Kenya Tourist Visa and Uganda Visa Requirements.

Rwanda Visa on Arrival

Rwanda offers visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport for most nationalities (single entry, USD 50). Rwanda’s airport is modern and the immigration process is generally efficient, but applying online before travel is still recommended. Having your Rwanda visa approved in advance means a faster border experience and no risk of being caught without cash if card terminals are temporarily unavailable.

How to Apply for a Rwanda Visa Online

Rwanda processes all international visas through its official e-immigration portal managed by the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration. The entire Rwanda visa application is completed online — no embassy visit or paper application is needed.

  1. Go to the official Rwanda e-immigration portal — visit the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration website (irembo.gov.rw is Rwanda’s main government services portal)
  2. Create an account — register with your email address
  3. Choose your visa type — single entry, multiple entry, or East Africa Tourist Visa
  4. Complete the application form — personal details, travel dates, purpose of visit, accommodation details
  5. Upload your documents — passport bio data page, passport photograph, and yellow fever certificate if arriving from an endemic country
  6. Pay the Rwanda visa fee — Visa or Mastercard accepted
  7. Receive your approval by email — within 24 to 72 hours
  8. Print and carry your approval letter — present it with your passport at the port of entry

Apply at least two weeks before your travel date to allow time for any follow-up requests. For peak season travel (June–September, December–February), applying 4 to 6 weeks ahead gives the most comfortable lead time.

Documents Required for Your Rwanda Visa Application

  • Valid passport — minimum 6 months validity beyond your travel dates, with at least one blank visa page
  • Recent passport photograph — colour, plain background, digital file for the online portal
  • Return or onward travel ticket
  • Confirmed accommodation — hotel booking confirmation or a letter from your host
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate — required if you are arriving from a yellow fever endemic country (see section below)
  • Proof of sufficient funds — a bank statement or financial guarantee to cover your stay

Yellow Fever and Rwanda: What You Need to Know

Rwanda requires a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate from travellers arriving from — or transiting through — yellow fever endemic countries. In practice, this affects most visitors on multi-country East Africa itineraries. If your routing goes through Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, or any other sub-Saharan endemic zone before Rwanda, your yellow fever certificate will be checked.

For visitors flying direct into Kigali from a non-endemic country (direct flights from the UK, Europe, the Gulf, or North America with no stopover in an endemic zone), Rwanda’s yellow fever requirement may not apply. However, most travel health authorities strongly recommend the yellow fever vaccine regardless, as it is often required for other points along your journey. Check with your travel clinic before departure.

The yellow fever vaccine is considered to provide lifetime protection under current WHO guidelines (no booster required after 10 years). Get vaccinated at least 10 to 14 days before departure for the vaccine to take full effect.

How Long Does Rwanda Visa Processing Take?

Online Rwanda visa applications are typically processed within 24 to 72 hours. During busy periods this may extend to 5 to 7 working days, which is why applying at least two weeks in advance is recommended. Processing time is generally faster than comparable visa applications in Uganda or Kenya. Rwanda’s immigration service has a strong reputation for efficient online processing.

Entering Rwanda: Border Crossings and Airports

By Air: Kigali International Airport

Kigali International Airport (KGL) is Rwanda’s main — and only — international gateway, located approximately 12 km from the city centre. It is one of the most modern and well-run airports in Africa. Airlines serving Kigali include RwandAir (direct to London Heathrow, Brussels, and multiple African hubs), Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Brussels Airlines, and others. Most international visitors arrive here before transferring to Musanze/Ruhengeri (about 2.5 to 3 hours by road) for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

Land Crossings from Uganda

Two main road crossings connect Uganda and Rwanda — both are straightforward and frequently used by safari visitors combining both countries:

  • Katuna/Gatuna — on the main Kabale (Uganda) to Kigali (Rwanda) road. The most commonly used crossing for visitors combining Bwindi gorilla trekking with Volcanoes National Park. Your Superfine Safaris guide will handle all border paperwork on your behalf
  • Cyanika — near Kisoro in southwest Uganda, close to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Used by visitors coming from the Mgahinga or Kisoro side before continuing to Musanze (Ruhengeri) in Rwanda

Land Crossings from Tanzania and DRC

  • Rusumo — Rwanda/Tanzania border in the southeast, on the road from Mwanza. Less commonly used by tourists but a valid entry point for overland travellers
  • Goma/Rubavu — Rwanda/DRC border at Lake Kivu. Used by visitors combining Rwanda with a DRC gorilla trek, subject to current DRC security conditions

Rwanda Visa Extension

A Rwanda visa can be extended in-country at the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration offices in Kigali. Single-entry visas are extendable to 90 days total. Extensions are typically processed within a few working days. Always apply before your current visa expires — overstaying a Rwanda visa is a serious immigration offence.

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Permit — Separate From Your Visa

Your Rwanda visa grants you entry to the country. A gorilla trekking permit is a completely separate requirement, issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), and must be booked in advance through your tour operator.

The current Rwanda gorilla trekking permit costs USD 1,500 per person per trek. Permits are strictly limited — only 8 visitors per gorilla family per day — and must be booked months ahead for peak season visits (June–September and December–February). Superfine Safaris handles all permit bookings as part of your Rwanda gorilla trekking package.

Is Rwanda Safe to Visit?

Rwanda is consistently one of the safest countries in Africa for international visitors. Kigali is often described as one of the cleanest and most orderly cities on the continent. Crime rates affecting tourists are extremely low. The country has a well-functioning government, reliable infrastructure by regional standards, and a tourism industry that is closely managed and professionally run.

Practical Notes on Rwanda
  • Plastic bags are banned — Rwanda prohibits single-use plastic carrier bags. They will be confiscated at the airport or border. Pack reusable fabric tote bags for shopping and daily use
  • Currency — the Rwandan Franc (RWF) is the national currency. USD is widely accepted at tourist lodges and in Kigali. ATMs in Kigali accept international Visa and Mastercard
  • Language — Kinyarwanda is the national language; English and French are official languages. English is widely spoken in hotels, lodges, and tourism contexts
  • Power — Rwanda uses Type C and Type J plugs (round-pin, 230V). Adaptors are widely available at Kigali airport and in town
  • Time zone — East Africa Time (EAT), UTC+3. No daylight saving
What to Do in Rwanda Beyond Gorilla Trekking

Rwanda has an extraordinary amount to offer beyond the gorillas. The top places to visit in Rwanda beyond gorillas include Nyungwe Forest (chimpanzee trekking and Africa’s largest montane rainforest), Akagera National Park (Rwanda’s Big Five safari), Kigali City (the Genocide Memorial, art galleries, excellent food), golden monkey trekking, and the hauntingly beautiful Virunga volcanoes. Ready to Plan Your Rwanda Safari?

Your Rwanda visa is the straightforward part. The more complex — and rewarding — planning is building the itinerary itself: which gorilla family, which sector of Volcanoes National Park, how many days in the country, and whether to combine Rwanda with Uganda, Kenya, or Tanzania.
