Who Can Buy Permits?
Uganda gorilla permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) — either purchased directly at UWA offices in Kampala, through your licensed safari operator, or (for foreign visitors) most easily via a registered Uganda tour operator who handles the procurement on your behalf. Rwanda permits are purchased through Rwanda Development Board (RDB). In both cases, your safari operator should buy and hold the permit in your name as part of the booking process.
Can I Buy Permits Without an Operator?
Technically yes — UWA sells permits directly to individuals, and you can in theory self-drive to Bwindi. In practice, few experienced travellers do this: the roads require a skilled 4WD driver, accommodation at Bwindi needs to be booked and coordinated with the trek, and the margin between paying a licensed operator and buying direct is relatively small compared to the logistical complexity of doing it yourself. Most visitors use a licensed operator.
What Happens If I Miss My Trek Date?
Gorilla permits are date-specific and non-refundable once purchased. If you miss your trek date due to illness, flight delays, or other reasons, the permit is forfeited — unless UWA or RDB offers a reschedule in exceptional circumstances (they sometimes do for medical reasons with a doctor’s certificate). Travel insurance with a “trip interruption” clause that covers pre-paid non-refundable activities is strongly recommended for gorilla trekking safaris.
