The Isumo Waterfall

The Isumo waterfall is Nyungwe’s most visited natural feature and the destination of the park’s most popular half-day hike. The trail descends from Gisakura Visitor Centre through dense riverine forest, crossing several log bridges over the streams that feed the falls, before arriving at a wide pool beneath a curtain of white water dropping approximately 30 metres through a rock-framed gorge. The walk takes around 2 to 3 hours return and is suitable for most fitness levels, though the descent is steep in places and waterproof boots are recommended year-round.

Bigugu Waterfall and Summit Trail

The Bigugu trail combines the park’s second major waterfall with the ascent to Nyungwe’s highest point at 2,950 metres. It is a full-day commitment — 8 to 10 hours return — and should only be attempted by fit walkers with proper hiking boots and warm layers for the alpine summit zone. The trail passes through five distinct vegetation bands from lowland riverine forest to afro-alpine heath, with the waterfall encountered in the middle section before the ascent steepens. On a clear day the summit view takes in Lake Kivu, the Virunga volcanoes, and the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Wildlife Along the Waterfall Trails

The riverine forest along Nyungwe’s stream valleys is prime habitat for several of the park’s most spectacular species. Ruwenzori colobus monkeys are regularly seen in the canopy above the Isumo trail, and the forest edge near the falls attracts African fish eagle and malachite kingfisher. Chimpanzee groups sometimes move through the lower riverine forest on the Isumo route — an unplanned encounter that surprises many hikers. For a guaranteed chimp experience, however, a dedicated chimpanzee trekking permit is still required.

Best Time for Waterfall Hikes in Nyungwe

The waterfalls are at their most dramatic during and immediately after the rainy seasons (March to May and October to November), when the volume of water is highest. However, the trails are slippery and crossings can be difficult after heavy rain. The dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer safer trail conditions and clearer skies for photography. Whatever the season, start the Isumo hike early — by 7am if possible — to avoid afternoon cloud that frequently settles over the lower valleys by midday. Combine the waterfall hike with the canopy walk the following morning for a full two-day Nyungwe programme.
