Getting to Uganda From South Africa
There are no direct flights from South Africa to Entebbe International Airport. All connections involve at least one stopover. The most popular routing options from Johannesburg OR Tambo International are:
- Via Nairobi — Kenya Airways operates well-timed connections between Johannesburg and Nairobi, with onward service to Entebbe. Total travel time is approximately seven to nine hours.
- Via Addis Ababa — Ethiopian Airlines connects Johannesburg to Entebbe via Addis Ababa with good timing and competitive fares. Total travel time is approximately eight to ten hours.
- Via Kigali — RwandAir connects Johannesburg to Kigali with onward service to Entebbe, or you can end your journey in Kigali and do gorilla trekking in Rwanda instead.
- Via Dubai, Istanbul or Amsterdam — Emirates, Turkish Airlines, and KLM all offer connections from Johannesburg to Entebbe for those who prefer the longer European or Gulf routing.
Entebbe is approximately a one-hour drive from Kampala, Uganda’s capital. Most safaris begin the day after arrival to allow a night’s rest before the drive south to Bwindi.
Visa and Entry Requirements
South African passport holders require a Uganda tourist visa. The most convenient option is the Uganda e-visa, which can be applied for online before departure (currently USD 50 for a single-entry visa). Processing typically takes three to five working days. Carry a printed copy of your approval letter along with your passport when entering Uganda.
You will also need a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate, which is a mandatory entry requirement for Uganda. Carry your Yellow Card at all times during travel.
Recommended Itinerary From South Africa
Given the travel time involved, a minimum of eight days is recommended to do justice to a gorilla trekking trip from South Africa. A popular structure is:
- Day 1: Fly from Johannesburg; arrive Entebbe. Transfer to Kampala or Entebbe area hotel for an overnight rest.
- Days 2–3: Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest via the scenic route through Mbarara and Lake Mburo (stop for a game drive). Overnight in Bwindi.
- Day 4: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This is the centrepiece of the trip — allow the full day.
- Days 5–6: Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives and boat safari on the Kazinga Channel. Option to add chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge.
- Day 7: Drive back to Entebbe. Optional city tour of Kampala.
- Day 8: Fly back to Johannesburg.
This itinerary can be extended to ten or twelve days to include Murchison Falls National Park in northern Uganda, the Nile, or a chimpanzee trekking day in Kibale Forest. It can also be combined with gorilla trekking in Rwanda for a twin-country itinerary.
Best Time to Travel From South Africa
Uganda’s peak gorilla trekking seasons align reasonably well with South African school and public holiday calendars. The June to August dry season is Uganda’s most popular trekking window and falls during South Africa’s winter and school holidays — meaning permits sell out quickly for these months. Book at least six months ahead for July travel. December is also excellent and coincides with the South African festive season; again, book early.
The shoulder months of January and February offer good conditions, fewer crowds, and sometimes lower lodge rates — an ideal option for South African travellers who have flexibility outside school terms.
Gorilla Permit and Trip Cost
The Uganda gorilla trekking permit costs USD 700 per person, issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. This is the single largest fixed cost of the trip. Total trip costs from South Africa — including flights, accommodation, permit, and park fees — typically range from USD 3,500 to USD 7,000 per person for eight to ten days depending on the lodge category you choose.
