Lake Nkugute is a small, spectacularly beautiful volcanic crater lake in the Fort Portal area of western Uganda — close to Kibale Forest National Park and the Queen Elizabeth National Park border. Surrounded by steep, forested crater walls and papyrus swamp, Nkugute is primarily visited by birders and travellers seeking a quiet scenic stop between Kibale chimpanzee trekking and a Queen Elizabeth game drive. It is little-known outside specialist birding circles, which is part of its appeal.

The Setting

Nkugute sits at about 1,070m in Uganda’s western rift shoulder — a classic Ugandan crater lake, formed by a collapsed volcanic vent and now filled with deep water. The crater walls are steep and forested, dropping to a narrow papyrus belt at the water’s edge. The lake has no permanent outflow and is fed by underground springs; the water is clear and still, and the reflection of the surrounding forest is perfect on windless mornings.

Birding at Lake Nkugute

The papyrus fringe of Lake Nkugute is the main draw. Target species:

  • Papyrus gonolek: A brilliantly coloured black-and-red bird that stays hidden in the papyrus stems but is responsive to playback
  • White-winged warbler: Globally near-threatened, found in very few Uganda wetlands
  • Carruthers’s cisticola: Papyrus-restricted species
  • Blue swallow: Migrant, present October–March — a globally threatened species
  • African swamp warbler and lesser swamp warbler

The forest on the crater walls adds blue-headed sunbird, Ruwenzori double-collared sunbird, and various woodland species. A 3-hour birding session can produce 50–60 species.

Getting to Lake Nkugute

Lake Nkugute is approximately 15km south of Kibale Forest NP headquarters at Kanyanchu, accessible by the Fort Portal–Kasese road. A local guide is helpful for locating the lake access and the best birding positions in the papyrus. No formal facilities at the lake — bring water and snacks.

Combining Nkugute with Kibale

Nkugute works perfectly as an afternoon extension after chimpanzee trekking in Kibale — the trek ends by midday, leaving the afternoon for a 3-hour birding session before returning to Fort Portal or continuing south to Queen Elizabeth.
