The Karisimbi gorilla family lives at higher altitude than any other habituated gorilla group in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. Their home range extends up the slopes of Mount Karisimbi — at 4,507 metres the tallest volcano in the Virunga chain — making this one of the most demanding gorilla treks in Africa. For fit, adventurous trekkers, it is also one of the most spectacular.

About the Karisimbi Family

The Karisimbi family takes its name from the volcano that dominates their territory. They have been habituated for tourism for over a decade and are well accustomed to the presence of human observers, making for calm and natural behaviour during the one-hour visit despite the wild, high-altitude setting.

The family typically numbers between 14 and 18 individuals, led by a dominant silverback. Their range on the upper slopes of Karisimbi means they inhabit a different ecological zone from the lower-altitude families: denser moss forest, giant lobelias, and Senecio trees that grow only above 3,000 metres. The vegetation here has a surreal, primeval quality — and watching mountain gorillas move through it is unlike any other gorilla trekking experience.

Because of the altitude and exertion involved, the Karisimbi family is typically allocated to the fittest members of each day’s trekking group. If you are concerned about fitness, speak to your guide at the morning briefing — they assess each trekker and allocate families accordingly.

The Trekking Experience

All Volcanoes National Park treks begin at the Kinigi park headquarters at 7:00 am. The briefing allocates visitors to families; those heading to Karisimbi should be prepared for a long day. Trek duration is typically five to eight hours return, with some treks lasting the better part of the day depending on where the family has moved.

The ascent to Karisimbi’s territory is steep and sustained. Trekkers gain significant altitude over the course of the hike, moving from open farmland at the park boundary through bamboo forest, Hagenia woodland, and finally into the high-altitude moorland and moss forest where the family ranges. This gradient makes the trek physically demanding but the scenery along the way is exceptional.

Porters are strongly recommended and experienced trekkers who have done both a lower-altitude and Karisimbi trek consistently say the porter makes a significant difference on the long descent. Porters are available at the trailhead and are inexpensive relative to the permit cost.

The one-hour observation period is the same as for all gorilla families. At this altitude, the temperature can be surprisingly cold — bring a light fleece layer even if it feels warm at Kinigi in the morning.

Combining Karisimbi Trekking With Volcano Hiking

For those with extra days, Volcanoes National Park offers hiking on several of the Virunga volcanoes including Mount Bisoke (a full-day hike to the crater lake), Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Gahinga. These can be combined with gorilla trekking to create a multi-day adventure in the Virunga Massif. Some visitors combine a Karisimbi gorilla trek with a golden monkey trekking experience, which is also available in the park.

Getting There and Booking

Volcanoes National Park is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Kigali. Most visitors stay in the Kinigi area for gorilla trekking. Gorilla permits in Rwanda cost USD 1,500 per person, issued by the Rwanda Development Board through licensed operators. Given the Karisimbi family’s reputation and the limited permit quota across all of Rwanda’s gorilla families, book as early as possible — ideally six to twelve months ahead for peak season.
