Uganda is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit Uganda shifts depending on what you are there to do. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is possible in every month the gorillas do not migrate but dry season trails are easier and more comfortable than wet season mud. Game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park are best when the grass is short and animals concentrate around water. Birders, meanwhile, often prefer the wet seasons when migratory species arrive. This guide covers every month so you can choose the right time for your Uganda safari.
Uganda’s Two Dry Seasons
Uganda sits on the equator and receives rainfall throughout much of the year, but two main dry seasons offer the best overall conditions for most activities:
- June to August (long dry season) — Uganda’s primary dry season. The most popular period for gorilla trekking. Trails in Bwindi are drier and more manageable, game viewing in the savannah parks is at its best as vegetation thins, and the weather is generally pleasant with cooler temperatures. The most in-demand window — book gorilla permits 6 to 12 months ahead
- December to February (short dry season) — the second dry season. Also excellent for gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris. Slightly lower demand than June–August, with good permit availability. Popular for the Christmas and New Year holiday period
Uganda’s Two Wet Seasons
- March to May (long rains) — Uganda’s wettest period. Gorilla trekking is still possible, but forest trails in Bwindi become slippery and demanding. Lush, green, and beautiful — but physically harder. Lower permit demand and often better availability. Good value for experienced trekkers who are fit and prepared
- September to November (short rains) — shorter, less intense rains than March–May. Conditions are generally manageable. Some afternoon showers but mornings are often clear. A reasonable shoulder season with moderate prices and good wildlife
Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is possible 365 days a year — mountain gorillas are resident year-round and are located every single day by trackers. The question is trail conditions, not gorilla availability.
- June to August: The best conditions. Trails are drier, views through the canopy are clearer, and the overall experience is more comfortable. The most popular window permits sell out furthest in advance
- December to February: Excellent conditions, slightly less demand than June–August. A very good choice for travellers who cannot travel in summer
- March to May / September to November: Trekking is fully operational. Forest is spectacularly green and atmospheric. Trails are muddier and steeper in wet conditions good physical fitness and proper footwear are essential. Permits are more readily available and some lodges offer reduced rates

Best Time for Game Safaris in Uganda
Uganda’s savannah parks — Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, and Kidepo Valley — offer the best game viewing during the dry seasons when vegetation thins and animals concentrate around permanent water sources.
- June to August and December to February: Best game viewing. Murchison’s open savannah makes for excellent lion, buffalo, and elephant viewing. Queen Elizabeth’s tree-climbing lions in Ishasha are most reliably spotted when vegetation is low
- Wet seasons: Game viewing is harder in tall grass, but Murchison Falls’ boat safari on the Nile is excellent year-round. The boat cruise to the base of the falls is one of Uganda’s top wildlife experiences and is unaffected by rain
Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda
Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest and Budongo Forest is possible year-round. Chimpanzees are more active and easier to find during the dry seasons (June–August and December–February) when they range across larger areas in search of fruit. During the wet seasons, chimps may move less and concentrate in smaller areas — easier to locate, but the forest floor is wet and muddy.
Best Time for Birding in Uganda
Uganda is one of Africa’s top birding destinations — over 1,080 species have been recorded. The best birding is during the wet seasons (April–May and October–November) when Palearctic migratory species arrive and resident birds are in breeding plumage. The dry seasons are still excellent for birding but with a different species profile. Uganda’s birding highlights include the shoebill stork (Mabamba Swamp), African green broadbill, and over 50 Albertine Rift endemics.
Month-by-Month: Best Time to Visit Uganda
January and February
Short dry season excellent conditions. Good gorilla trekking, game viewing, and chimpanzee trekking. Lower demand than June–August. A very good time to visit with reasonable permit availability and pleasant weather. Recommended for visitors who cannot travel in June–August.
