The Bitukura gorilla family is one of the largest and most visited gorilla groups in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Based in the Ruhija sector of the park, Bitukura offers a trekking experience quite different from the lower sectors — the altitude is higher, the terrain more open in places, and the family’s relaxed temperament makes for extraordinarily close and calm observations. If you are trekking Bwindi from the Ruhija side, Bitukura is the family you are most likely to be allocated.

About the Bitukura Family
The Bitukura family was named after the Bitukura River that runs through their home range in the Ruhija area of Bwindi. They were habituated for tourism in 2008, making them one of the more recently established trekking families in Uganda.
At their peak the Bitukura family numbered over 24 individuals — one of the largest habituated groups in Bwindi. The family is distinctive for having multiple silverbacks living within the same group, which is relatively unusual and creates a dynamic social structure that visitors can observe first-hand. The dominant silverback leads group movements and mediates disputes, while sub-adult males play supporting roles within the hierarchy.
The family’s range sits at around 2,200 to 2,500 metres above sea level. The higher altitude means cooler temperatures — mornings in Ruhija can feel cold before the trek begins — and slightly different vegetation than the lower sectors. Bamboo and dense hagenia woodland characterise the upper slopes where Bitukura spends much of its time.
The Trekking Experience
Treks to the Bitukura family depart from the Ruhija ranger station, which sits about 30 kilometres from Kabale town and roughly 90 kilometres from the nearest major accommodation hub. The drive to Ruhija is scenic but the road is rough in sections — a 4×4 vehicle is essential.
Trek durations range from one to five hours depending on where the family has moved overnight. The terrain around Ruhija includes steep ridges, bamboo thickets, and open moorland — it is more varied than the dense primary forest of Buhoma, and some trekkers find it easier to navigate. Porters are available at the ranger station and are strongly recommended, particularly for the descent.
Groups are limited to eight visitors per family per day. You will spend one hour with the gorillas once located. The Bitukura family’s large size means there is always something happening — feeding, play between juveniles, the silverback moving through the group. The presence of multiple silverbacks adds a layer of social complexity that makes the hour feel very full.
Getting to Ruhija
Ruhija is the most remote of Bwindi’s four trekking sectors. The drive from Kabale takes approximately two hours on unpaved road. Most visitors stay in lodges in or near Ruhija the night before trekking — there is a small selection of accommodation options ranging from comfortable mid-range camps to more basic bandas. Your safari operator will arrange appropriate accommodation as part of your itinerary.
Ruhija can also be reached as part of a longer itinerary combining Bwindi with Queen Elizabeth National Park, Lake Bunyonyi, or other southern Uganda destinations.
Booking Your Trek
Gorilla trekking permits for the Bitukura family cost USD 700 per person and must be booked through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) via a licensed Uganda safari operator. Permits sell out well in advance, particularly for the peak months of June, July, August, and December. We recommend securing your permit at least four to six months ahead of your preferred dates.
Only eight visitors per day are permitted to trek the Bitukura family. Your operator will confirm availability and handle all UWA permit bookings on your behalf.
