Part of our Rwanda Safari Guide 2027 — the complete resource for gorilla trekking, Volcanoes NP, Nyungwe Forest, Akagera Big Five and practical planning.

Rwanda safari cost begins and ends with one number: USD 1,500. That is the price of a single gorilla trekking permit, and it is the largest single line item in any Rwanda safari budget. Everything else — the lodge, the transfers, the flights, the other park fees — is secondary. Understanding why the permit costs what it costs, what it includes, and how to build the rest of your budget around it is the purpose of this Rwanda safari cost guide. We also cover the cost of Nyungwe Forest chimp trekking, Akagera National Park, volcano hikes, and the difference in overall trip cost between budget, mid-range and luxury travel in Rwanda.

Rwanda Safari Cost: The Gorilla Permit

The Rwanda gorilla trekking permit is issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and costs USD 1,500 per person per trek, regardless of nationality, season or which gorilla family you are assigned to. The permit covers one trek of up to one hour with a habituated gorilla family, guided by RDB rangers. No negotiation, no discounts, no agents who can sell it cheaper — the price is fixed and all legitimate permits come from the same source.

The permit is the single biggest reason Rwanda costs more than Uganda for gorilla trekking. Uganda charges USD 800 per permit, making it USD 700 cheaper per person per trek. For a couple doing one trek each, that is a USD 1,400 difference before any other costs are considered. See our honest comparison of gorilla trekking in Uganda vs Rwanda to decide which is right for your trip.

What the Rwanda premium buys you:

  • Smaller groups — a maximum of eight trekkers per gorilla family (Uganda also caps at eight, so this is not a differentiator)
  • Better lodge infrastructure — the lodge market around Volcanoes NP is the most developed gorilla trekking lodge scene in Africa, with options ranging from Wilderness Sabyinyo to Singita Kwitonda and One&Only Gorilla’s Nest
  • Faster international connections — Kigali has more direct flights from Europe and the Middle East than Entebbe, saving hours on multi-destination trips
  • Infrastructure — Kigali is the most functional and easiest-to-navigate city in East Africa; roads to Volcanoes NP are smooth tarmac throughout

Permits for the peak months — June to September and December to February — sell out six to twelve months ahead. Superfine Safaris secures permits as part of your full itinerary booking. Contact us to check availability for your dates.

Rwanda Safari Cost by Budget Tier

Cost of a Rwanda safariBudget: USD 250–450 per person per day

A budget Rwanda safari is possible but requires managing expectations carefully. The gorilla permit is non-negotiable at USD 1,500, so the budget strategy is to keep everything around it lean: guesthouse accommodation in Musanze rather than a lodge, shared transfers from Kigali, and a short itinerary focused only on the gorilla trek. Budget guesthouses and simple lodges near Volcanoes NP cost USD 60–150 per person per night with breakfast. A 4-day budget Rwanda gorilla trip (1 night Kigali, 2 nights Musanze, 1 trek) typically costs USD 1,900–2,400 per person total, of which USD 1,500 is the permit alone.

Mid-Range: USD 500–900 per person per day

Mid-range is where most Superfine Safaris Rwanda clients sit. At this level you get comfortable lodge accommodation within 30 minutes of the park gate, private transfers throughout, and the option to add a second day’s activity — golden monkey trekking, a volcano hike, or the Dian Fossey tomb trail. Mid-range lodges near Volcanoes NP cost USD 250–500 per person per night, usually with full board included. A 6-day mid-range Rwanda circuit covering Kigali, Akagera and Volcanoes NP costs approximately USD 4,500–6,500 per person, all-in.

Luxury: USD 1,000–3,000+ per person per day

Rwanda’s luxury gorilla lodges are genuinely world-class. Properties like Singita Kwitonda Lodge (USD 1,800–2,500 per person per night), Wilderness Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge (USD 900–1,400), and One&Only Gorilla’s Nest (USD 800–1,500) sit at the very top of the safari lodge market globally. At this level rates are all-inclusive: all meals, drinks, one gorilla permit, and most activities are wrapped into the nightly rate. A 5-day luxury Rwanda trip (Kigali + Volcanoes NP) typically costs USD 7,000–15,000+ per person.

Rwanda Safari Cost: Park by Park

Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes NP fees beyond the gorilla permit:

  • Golden monkey trekking: USD 100 per person
  • Mountain gorilla trekking : USD 1500 per person
  • Dian Fossey Tomb hike: USD 75 per person (half-day guided trail to the Karisoke Research Centre site)
  • Volcano hikes: USD 75–200 per person depending on the volcano (Bisoke USD 75, Karisimbi USD 400 for the 2-day summit, Muhabura USD 75, Sabyinyo USD 75, Gahinga USD 75)
  • Iby’iwacu Cultural Village visit: USD 30–40 per person

Most visitors do one gorilla trek and one add-on activity. Budget USD 100–200 per person for the second day’s activity beyond the permit. See the Volcanoes NP complete guide for the full activity breakdown.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

One and Only Nyungwe HouseNyungwe charges a conservation fee plus activity fees:

  • Park entry: USD 40 per person per day
  • Chimpanzee trekking: USD 90 per person per trek
  • Canopy walkway: USD 60 per person
  • Colobus monkey walk: USD 30 per person
  • Waterfall trail: USD 30 per person
  • Birding walk: USD 30–40 per person

A day in Nyungwe doing chimp trekking and the canopy walk costs approximately USD 190 per person in activity fees before accommodation. Most mid-range itineraries budget two nights in Nyungwe. See the Nyungwe Forest complete guide for lodge options and activity timing.

Akagera National Park

Akagera is Rwanda’s most affordable park for activity fees:

  • Park entry: USD 40 per person per day
  • Boat safari (Lake Ihema): USD 40 per person (highly recommended — excellent hippo, crocodile and bird viewing)
  • Night game drive: USD 40 per person
  • Rhino tracking: USD 40 per person (guided, on foot)

A full day in Akagera covering a morning game drive, boat safari and night drive costs around USD 120 per person in fees before accommodation. Lodges inside Akagera run USD 200–500 per person per night at mid-range, all-in. See our complete Akagera guide for what to expect from each activity.

Getting to Rwanda: Flight and Transfer Costs

Rwanda does not have domestic flights — the country is small enough (four hours end to end) that road transfers cover all inter-park moves. All arrival and departure costs are international flight costs.

Kigali International Airport (KGL) has strong direct or one-stop connections:

  • London Heathrow → Kigali (RwandAir direct, ~8.5 hrs): typically USD 700–1,400 return
  • Amsterdam/Brussels → Kigali: USD 650–1,200 return
  • Nairobi → Kigali (1 hr, multiple airlines daily): USD 150–350 return
  • Addis Ababa → Kigali (Ethiopian, 2.5 hrs): USD 250–500 return
  • Dubai → Kigali (RwandAir/Emirates): USD 500–900 return

Ground transfers within Rwanda: Kigali to Musanze (Volcanoes NP gateway, 2.5 hrs) costs USD 80–150 one way in a private vehicle. Kigali to Akagera (3 hrs east) costs USD 80–120. Musanze to Nyungwe (4.5 hrs south) costs USD 120–180. All transfers are included in Superfine Safaris packaged itineraries.

Rwanda Visa Cost

Rwanda offers one of the most open visa regimes in Africa:

  • African Union citizens: visa-free entry
  • UK, USA, Canada, Australia, EU and most other nationalities: e-Visa for USD 50, applied online before travel (approval typically within 72 hours)
  • Visa on arrival: available for most nationalities at Kigali Airport, also USD 50

See the full Rwanda visa requirements guide for the complete country-by-country list and application instructions.

Tips to Reduce Rwanda Safari Cost

  • Travel in March–May or November. The rainy seasons bring lower lodge rates (20–40% off peak prices), uncrowded forests, lush green gorilla habitat and some of the best photography conditions of the year. The gorillas are there year-round — only the ground underfoot changes.
  • Book permits as far ahead as possible. Permits do not have an early-booking discount, but booking early gives you first choice of peak season dates and lets you build a cheaper lodge itinerary around confirmed permits rather than paying premium last-minute rates for whatever accommodation remains.
  • Combine Rwanda with Uganda. If you want two gorilla treks, one in Rwanda (USD 1,500) and one in Uganda (USD 800) costs USD 2,300 total for two separate gorilla experiences in different habitats — cheaper than two Rwanda permits at USD 3,000, with much more variety. Our cross-border itineraries fly into Kigali and out of Entebbe, or vice versa. See our Uganda and Rwanda gorilla comparison for how to decide.
  • Stay in Musanze town rather than a park lodge. Guesthouses and mid-range hotels in Musanze (the nearest town to Volcanoes NP, 30 minutes from the park gate) cost a fraction of the dedicated lodge rates while still getting you to the trek on time. This is the most effective single way to reduce Rwanda safari cost without cutting the permit.
  • Do the 3-park circuit over 7–8 days. Spending 2 nights at each of Akagera, Nyungwe and Volcanoes NP spreads the permit cost across more nights and gives you a complete Rwanda experience. The cost per day drops significantly compared to a 4-day gorilla-only trip where the USD 1,500 permit is amortised over fewer nights.

Rwanda Safari Cost: Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Rwanda gorilla trekking so expensive?

The USD 1,500 permit price is a deliberate conservation strategy. Rwanda raised the permit price from USD 750 to USD 1,500 in 2017, following the principle that limiting visitor numbers and maximising revenue per visitor is better for gorilla conservation than high-volume, low-cost tourism. A portion of every permit goes directly to communities living around Volcanoes NP through Rwanda’s Revenue Sharing Programme. The premium also funds anti-poaching operations, ranger salaries and veterinary care for the gorilla families. For a deeper look at the economics, see our Rwanda gorilla permit cost guide.

Is Rwanda cheaper than Uganda for gorilla trekking?

No. Uganda’s gorilla permit costs USD 800 versus Rwanda’s USD 1,500 — a USD 700 difference per person per trek. Uganda lodge accommodation near Bwindi is also generally cheaper than equivalent lodges near Volcanoes NP. For most travellers, a Uganda gorilla safari is 30–50% cheaper than an equivalent Rwanda trip. Rwanda’s premium is justified by faster international connections, better road infrastructure and the quality of the lodge market — but for budget-conscious travellers Uganda is the clear choice. See our Uganda vs Rwanda gorilla trekking comparison for a full side-by-side breakdown.

Can I do Rwanda gorilla trekking on a budget?

Yes, if you treat the USD 1,500 permit as a fixed cost and reduce everything around it. Staying in a guesthouse in Musanze rather than a lodge, using shared rather than private transfers, and visiting in a low season (March–May or November) can bring a 4-day Rwanda gorilla trip to approximately USD 2,000–2,200 per person — still expensive by most travel standards, but achievable.

How much should I tip on a Rwanda safari?

Standard tipping: USD 10–20 per person per day for your driver-guide, and USD 10–15 per day for lodge staff (communal tip box). For the gorilla trekking specifically, a tip of USD 20–30 per person to your leading ranger is customary and genuinely appreciated. On a 7-day Rwanda circuit, budget USD 150–200 per person in total tips.

What does a Rwanda gorilla trekking permit include?

The USD 1,500 permit includes: entry to Volcanoes National Park for the day of the trek, assignment to a gorilla family group, a briefing at park headquarters, a lead ranger guide and armed ranger escort for the duration of the trek, and exactly one hour of time with the gorilla family. It does not include accommodation, transfers, meals, gratuities, additional activities (golden monkeys, volcano hikes) or travel insurance. See the full Rwanda gorilla trekking guide for everything else you need to know about the day itself.
