Tanzania Safari Guide: The Two Circuits

Tanzania offers two safari circuits: the Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Arusha, Kilimanjaro) and the Southern Circuit (Ruaha, Selous/Nyerere, Mikumi). Most visitors start with the northern circuit. The northern parks are world-famous for the wildebeest migration and the Ngorongoro Crater’s extraordinary concentration of wildlife. The southern parks are wilder, less visited and offer outstanding walking safaris.

The Serengeti: Tanzania’s Greatest Park

The Serengeti National Park is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. Covering 14,763 km², it has the highest density of large predators on Earth and is the stage for the wildebeest migration — 1.5 million animals moving in a continuous loop between Tanzania and Kenya’s Masai Mara. The Serengeti’s character changes dramatically by region and season:

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro CraterThe Ngorongoro Conservation Area contains the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, a 260 km² enclosed ecosystem that functions as a natural zoo. The crater floor holds the highest density of Big Five wildlife anywhere in Africa, including one of Tanzania’s last significant black rhino populations. A full day’s game drive in Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most reliably spectacular wildlife experiences on the continent.

Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Arusha

Tarangire National Park is famous for its ancient baobab trees and enormous elephant herds — in the dry season (Jul–Oct) it has the highest elephant concentration of any park in Tanzania. Lake Manyara is best known for its tree-climbing lions and vast flamingo flocks. Arusha National Park is a compact park in the shadow of Mount Meru — excellent for walking safaris and a short stop en route from Arusha airport. See the Arusha city guide for what to do in the safari capital.

Zanzibar: Tanzania’s Indian Ocean Island

Zanzibar combines with any Tanzania safari as a natural beach extension. The island has world-class beaches, incredible snorkelling and diving, and Stone Town — a UNESCO World Heritage site with centuries of Swahili, Arab and Portuguese history. Things to do in Zanzibar range from lying on the 15 best beaches and cultural experiences to dolphin tours, spice farm tours and honeymoon packages. Most Tanzania safari itineraries end with 3–4 nights in Zanzibar.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa at 5,895m and one of the world’s most climbed high-altitude mountains. The most popular routes are Machame (6–7 days) and Lemosho (7–8 days). No technical climbing skill is required, but physical fitness and acclimatisation are critical. January–February and June–October are the best months. Compare it with Mount Rwenzori in Uganda if you are choosing between the two.

Southern Circuit: Ruaha and Selous

Tanzania’s southern parks are among Africa’s last true wildernesses. Ruaha National Park is Tanzania’s largest park and has Africa’s greatest lion density alongside wild dogs, elephants and vast baobab-studded plains. Selous/Nyerere National Park (now Nyerere National Park) has the largest protected area in Africa and is outstanding for boat safaris on the Rufiji River. Gombe Stream on Lake Tanganyika is where Jane Goodall conducted her chimpanzee research and still offers chimpanzee trekking in Mahale.

The Wildebeest Migration

Wildebeest Migration n Serengeti National ParkThe wildebeest migration in Tanzania follows an annual clockwise loop across the Serengeti and into Kenya’s Masai Mara. The calving season (late January to February) in the Ndutu area of the southern Serengeti is one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles in Africa. The famous river crossings at the Mara River happen from July to October in the northern Serengeti and into the Masai Mara in Kenya. See our Tanzania vs Kenya migration comparison for choosing which side to base yourself.

Getting to Tanzania: Flights and Entry Points

Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam (DAR) and Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) near Arusha are Tanzania’s main international gateways. Most northern circuit safaris fly into JRO. Direct flights operate from Amsterdam (KLM), Doha (Qatar Airways), Dubai (Emirates), Nairobi (Kenya Airways/Jambojet) and Addis Ababa (Ethiopian). From the UK: approximately 11 hours via a hub. See the drive time guide between Tanzania destinations and the Arusha to Serengeti road guide for getting around on the ground.
