Planning a Kenya safari itinerary means choosing from one of Africa’s richest menus of wildlife destinations. The Masai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, Tsavo, Lake Nakuru, the Laikipia Plateau, and the Kenya coast are all world-class in their own right — the challenge is building a circuit that fits your time, budget, and travel priorities. This Kenya safari itinerary guide offers sample plans for 7, 10, and 14 days, with advice on how to combine parks, how to move between them, and what each circuit is best suited for.
Kenya Safari Itinerary Planning: Key Questions
When to Plan Your Kenya Safari Itinerary
Your travel dates are the single most important variable in any Kenya safari itinerary. If you are visiting between July and October, a Masai Mara-focused itinerary built around the wildebeest migration river crossings is the obvious priority. If you are travelling in January–February, the Mara still delivers excellent resident wildlife at lower prices, and Amboseli’s dry-season elephant viewing is at its peak. Fly-In or Road Kenya Safari Itinerary?
Kenya’s parks are spread across a large area. Covering more than two parks on a road-only itinerary means long drives that eat into game drive time. Fly-in Kenya safari itineraries using light aircraft between Wilson Airport (Nairobi) and the various park airstrips are faster, more comfortable, and allow you to cover more ground in less time. They cost more — typically USD 150–400 per person per flight segment — but on a 7 or 10 day trip, the time saved is significant. Many travellers drive to the first park from Nairobi, fly between mid-circuit parks, and drive back at the end.
Migration or General Wildlife?
The Great Migration at the Masai Mara is one of the world’s most iconic wildlife events, but it draws heavy visitor numbers in July–October. If you are travelling outside the migration window, a Kenya safari itinerary built around the Mara’s resident lion prides, Amboseli’s elephant herds against Kilimanjaro, and Samburu’s Special Five delivers outstanding wildlife in any month. A non-migration Kenya safari itinerary can cover more parks at lower cost with fewer crowds.

Kenya Safari Itinerary: Practical Tips
- Minimum nights per park: 2 nights is the absolute minimum; 3 nights is better for the Masai Mara. One-night stops work for Nakuru and Naivasha but not for parks requiring long drives to reach
- Internal flights: Scheduled services link Wilson Airport to the Mara (Keekorok, Ol Kiombo, Musiara airstrips), Samburu, Amboseli, Tsavo, and Lewa. Safarilink and Air Kenya are the main operators
- Road vs fly: The Nairobi–Nakuru–Naivasha road circuit is comfortable to drive. Nairobi to Amboseli (4 hrs) is manageable. Nairobi to the Mara (5–6 hrs on rough road) is better flown
- Visa: The Kenya eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) replaced the traditional visa. Apply online before travel. See our Kenya visa guide for full details
- Pack right: Read our Kenya safari packing list for clothing, gear, and health essentials
- Booking lead time: For July–October migration safaris, book 9 to 12 months ahead. For all other seasons, 3 to 6 months is usually sufficient
