Why Every Uganda Safari Guide Starts With the Same Question

Uganda packs more wildlife diversity into a smaller area than almost anywhere in Africa. You can track mountain gorillas in Bwindi in the morning and watch tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth that afternoon. Kibale Forest has the highest density of primates in the world. The Nile flows through Murchison Falls, the most powerful waterfall on Earth,  before opening into game-rich floodplains. And Kidepo Valley in the remote north offers the kind of wild, uncrowded safari experience that East Africa’s more famous parks have largely lost.

  • Home to approximately half the world’s mountain gorillas
  • 13 national parks covering forest, savannah, wetland and montane habitats
  • 1,000+ bird species — Africa’s best birding country
  • The source of the Nile: white water rafting, bungee jumping and boat cruises on the world’s longest river
  • Genuine wilderness with fewer crowds than Kenya and Tanzania

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla TrekkingGorilla trekking is Uganda’s signature experience and the reason most visitors come. Uganda has two parks where you can track mountain gorillas: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi is the larger park, divided into four trekking sectors,  Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija, and Nkuringo  with different gorilla families, terrain and lodge options in each.

Uganda’s National Parks

Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda’s largest national park, home to lions, elephants, hippos, Nile crocodiles and the Rothschild giraffe. The boat cruise to the base of Murchison Falls is Uganda’s single best wildlife activity. Game drives in Murchison are excellent for the Big Four (no rhino). A hike to the top of the falls offers views over the most powerful waterfall on the Nile. The park is also outstanding for birding, including shoebill stork on the Nile delta.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park is famous for the tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha sector and for wildlife safaris on the Kazinga Channel. The Kazinga Channel boat cruise offers some of the best hippo and buffalo viewing in Africa. The park also has chimpanzees in Kyambura Gorge and excellent birding.

Kibale Forest National Park

Kibale Forest has the highest primate density in the world and the best chimpanzee trekking in Uganda. The forest is also home to 12 other primate species and outstanding birding. Nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is worth a visit. Best combined with Queen Elizabeth as part of a western Uganda circuit.

Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley is Uganda’s most remote and most spectacular park. Big cats, large elephant herds, buffalo and cheetah in a rugged semi-arid landscape that looks nothing like the rest of Uganda. It requires either a domestic flight or a long drive from Kampala — and rewards visitors with genuine wilderness and very few other tourists.

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo is the only park in Uganda with zebra and impala, and the closest national park to Kampala (3 hours). Perfect as a first-night stop en route to Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth. Excellent for walking safaris and birding.

Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda

Uganda is the best country in Africa for chimpanzee trekking. Options include Kibale Forest (most reliable sightings), Budongo Forest in Murchison Falls, Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth, and Kalinzu Forest Reserve. The chimpanzee habituation experience in Kibale allows 4+ hours with a semi-habituated group. See our guide to best places for chimpanzee trekking in East Africa.

Jinja and Nile Activities

Jinja, Uganda’s second city, sits on the Nile just below Lake Victoria and is the adventure capital of East Africa. Activities include white water rafting, bungee jumping over the Nile, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and sport fishing. Jinja also hosts the Nyege Nyege Festival every November — one of Africa’s best music festivals. The Sipi Falls in eastern Uganda are a stunning half-day side trip.

Cultural Experiences in Uganda

Uganda’s cultural heritage is as rich as its wildlife. Highlights include the Batwa Cultural Trail near Bwindi, Kampala city tours, homestay tours, the Imbalu circumcision ceremony of the Gisu people, rhino tracking at Ziwa Sanctuary, and the Bahai Temple in Kampala — the mother temple of Africa.
